Galaxy S20 has big limitations on 8K video

Samsung's Galaxy S20 series is capable of capturing 8K video, among many new features. Because this is such high image quality, Samsung had to place restrictions on its usage.

This was proven by SamMobile (via AndroidCentral), which said that the maximum 8K video that can be recorded at one time is 5 minutes.

Samsung claims that one minute of 8K video requires about 600MB of storage space, and that the phone will start a new file every 8GB.

However, the S20 series is not short on storage space. The standard S20 comes with 128GB of storage, while the S20 Plus and S20 Ultra offer a choice of 128GB or 512GB. These storage capacities can be expanded with MicroSD cards up to 1TB.

Also, the frame rate will be capped at 24 fps, which is acceptable since 24 fps is a common standard, but it is technically possible for both the Snapdragon 865 and Exynos 990 processors to record 8K video at up to 30 fps. Samsung will only sell the Snapdragon version of the S20 in the U.S., due to an unresolved business agreement with CPU maker Qualcomm, while the rest of the world will have Samsung's own chips in the S20.

However, there are contradictory statements; TechRadar reported in its hands-on with the Galaxy S20 Ultra that the phone will start a new file for every 8GB used during 8K recording. We will have to wait for Samsung's announcement to know for sure, as this does not make sense with the previously mentioned limit (600MB multiplied by 5 minutes is only 3GB).

Gladly, this limitation only affects a small part of the reason we are really looking forward to the S20 series. All three models revealed by Samsung have beautiful, smooth 120Hz displays, can take great photos both manually and with the help of Quick Take mode, and are all 5G compatible.
