MWC2020: Here are all the companies that have dropped out so far

Editor's Note: This article was originally published on February 10 and has been updated with the latest information on the status of Mobile World Congress 2020.

More major cell phone manufacturers have dropped off the exhibitor list for this month's Mobile World Congress in Barcelona. Following Sony's decision earlier this week to withdraw and TCL's decision to cancel its press conference, Nokia will skip the cell phone trade show due to concerns caused by the coronavirus outbreak, now considered a global health emergency.

Nokia announced this week that it will withdraw from MWC 2020 due to health and safety concerns. Similarly, HMD Global, which designs and sells cell phones under the Nokia brand name, also issued a statement saying it was withdrawing.

With HMD Global gone, the list of handset makers not attending the biggest mobile show of the year includes LG, Vivo, and Sony; TCL and ZTE have canceled their press events at MWC but have said they will showcase their phones at the event.

Sony's departure from MWC leaves a rather large hole in the event schedule. The consumer electronics giant has traditionally held a press event on the first day of MWC to announce new phones and mobile accessories. According to Sony, the press conference will continue to be held, but it will be a video-only event hosted on the Xperia YouTube channel. That event will take place on February 24 at 8:30 AM CET, or 2:30 AM EST.

In a statement released Sunday (Feb. 9), event organizers said the show will take place in Barcelona later this month as planned." The GSMA is proceeding as planned and will host MWC Barcelona on February 24-27, 2020." GSMA has confirmed that several large exhibitors have decided not to attend this year's MWC and others are considering their next steps, but more than 2,800 exhibitors will still attend."

However, we expect that some precautions will be taken for the show: the GSMA will not allow travelers from China's Hubei province to attend the event, and travelers from China will need to provide proof of their departure from the country 14 days before MWC. Event officials also plan to enforce cleaning and the use of sanitizers at MWC venues, while body temperature tests will be conducted on attendees.

According to Reuters, since the GSMA issued this statement, Spanish health officials have said they see no reason to cancel the show. However, the Financial Times reported today (February 12) that MWC officials are holding an emergency meeting to discuss whether to continue with the show.

Some companies are taking no chances against the coronavirus outbreak, which has claimed 1,100 lives and spread to more than 45,000 people, according to a site tracking the disease.

Below is a list of companies that have canceled or scaled back their exhibits at MWC 2020.
