Motorola Razr's battery life is a disaster - but there's a silver lining

Great smartphones last about 10 hours in Tom's Guide battery tests. Great smartphones last 11+ hours, and great smartphones approach or exceed 12 hours. The Motorola Razr is none of those.

In fact, Motorola's foldable phone has the shortest runtime of any smartphone in the last few years; with only 2,510mAh, we didn't expect much from this foldable phone's battery.

The result: the Razr lasted only 5 hours and 54 minutes, about 6 hours behind the phone with the best battery life. Terrible.

In light of the Razr's durability, the Pixel 4's 2,800mAh battery was pretty poor at 8:03. And this is more than 2 hours better than the new Razr. Other Android phones that are mediocre in the battery life department include the OnePlus 7T, but its 8:47 runtime looks spectacular compared to the Razr.

To be fair, the Razr is not designed to be used in the open position all the time. Therefore, there is a quick view display on the front that can be used in the closed position. This panel is useful for checking and responding to notifications, snapping selfies, mobile payments, controlling music, and interacting with Google Assistant.

For all the components needed to make a foldable phone, it seems that Motorola simply did not have room to cram in a larger battery. This is simply one of the trade-offs of making such a sleek design.

If the rumors are true, Samsung's foldable Galazy Z Flip, with a design similar to the Razr, would have a larger 3,300 mAh battery. But it should also drive a larger 6.7-inch display.

Overall, the Motorola Razr's battery life is one of the biggest reasons to avoid this $1,500 phone unless you plan to use the Quick View display heavily.
