Google Teases Big Android News at Galaxy S20 Event

Tech companies do not typically promote other companies' product launch events. So it is not hard to imagine that when Google's Twitter account started talking about next week's Galaxy Unpacked event by Samsung, eyebrows were raised.

The tweet, posted by Android's official Twitter account, promises that "something exciting is right around the corner" for the February 11 event, when Samsung is expected to unveil its Galaxy S20 lineup." See you at Unpacked," the tweet concludes, along with a six-second promo video.

The simplest reason for Google's sudden interest in Samsung's move has to do with another product likely to debut next week. Samsung will reportedly unveil the Galaxy Z Flip, a new foldable phone with a flip phone design, as Android 10 adds support for building apps that take advantage of devices with foldable displays, It is very possible that Google will be involved in the Galaxy Z Flip announcement to show off how Android apps will work on that device.

Android Authority, which discovered Google's tweet, raises another possibility, which relates to a January Korea Herald report that the S20 lineup is expected to include Google's Duo video chat application The idea is that the S20 will be the first phone in the world to feature Google's Duo video chat application. The idea is to include a FaceTime replacement alongside the default messaging app on Samsung phones, and to work with wireless carriers so that video messaging does not incur extra data charges.

The Korea Herald report seems to suggest that this feature will only be available in Korea, but if it is highlighted at the Galaxy S20 launch, it may suggest that Samsung and Google have bigger plans.

It is also approaching the time when Google will unveil an early version of its annual Android update and release an early beta version to developers. Samsung phones have not been included in past Android betas, and a consumer-focused Unpacked event seems an unlikely place for that kind of announcement.

It is not out of character for Samsung to include other tech giants in its product rollout. At the Galaxy Note 10 launch event last August, Microsoft's Satya Nadella appeared on stage to promote the two companies' partnership, which includes Windows support for Samsung's phablets.

The latest Unpacked event begins next Tuesday at 2 p.m. EST, and in addition to the Galaxy S20 and Galaxy Z Flip, we expect Samsung to announce the new Galaxy Buds wireless earphones. There could be a few other surprises in store, and it appears that Google may be involved in some of them.
