Galaxy Z Flip Completely Steals the Galaxy S20's Lightning

Galaxy Z Flip Completely Steals the Galaxy S20's Lightning

When Samsung takes the stage at its Unpacked 2020 event on February 11, many people are bound to be interested in the Galaxy S20. After all, there must be a good reason why the company is skipping the Galaxy S11 name for the S20.

Between the 120Hz displays, larger displays on all three expected models, the fast new Snapdragon 865 CPU CPU, and the S20 Ultra's purported 108MP camera, it's easy to see why Samsung is aiming for a Galaxy 2.0-like vibe. The Galaxy S20 has a good chance of making our best phones list as well.

However, once the Galaxy Z Flip is announced, I have a feeling that won't matter. According to all the rumors and leaks, this foldable phone will steal the spotlight from the Galaxy S20 in no time. Here's why.

When you finally put the Galaxy S20 phones on the shelf, they will not look that different from the Galaxy S10 and every other flagship phone on the market. But the Galaxy Z Flip will look and feel truly new.

Like the Motorola Razr, the Galaxy Z Flip is expected to be a foldable phone with a clamshell design. When folded, the whole thing should easily fit in a front pocket, but when unfolded, you get a huge 6.7-inch display. In other words, it has some novel elements, but it also looks useful as long as it is executed well. [Not only is the Galaxy Z Flip's screen larger than the new Motorola Razr (6.2 inches), but it is said to be made of ultra-thin glass rather than plastic. Until now, every foldable phone announced, including the first Galaxy Fold, has used a plastic display. And given concerns about the Fold's durability, there will be much curiosity about how Samsung achieved a foldable glass screen.

The Galaxy S20 Ultra is rumored to start at $1,300 with a 6.9-inch display and 5G connectivity standard, while the Galaxy Z Flip reportedly starts at $1,400. This exorbitant cost alone will cause many to ignore the S20 line on launch day. Can Samsung justify this cost?

Immediately after the Galaxy Z Flip is launched, people will compare this to the new Motorola Razr. The revival of this 2000s icon will also be a foldable flip phone, exclusive to Verizon, and priced even higher at $1,500. This rivalry would add to the intrigue surrounding the Galaxy Z Flip.

As someone who has been covering smartphones since long before the first iPhone was released, I have a pretty good sense of what is worth talking about. And while the Galaxy S20 may deserve a new name, the Galaxy Z Flip will be the one to watch.
