How to Watch the Super Bowl in 4K 2020

For once, you can watch the Super Bowl in 4K and HDR. All that's left is the game (and what snacks to make or order). That way, the moment the Lombardi Trophy is flung into the air, you'll be able to see it (and the players holding it) in higher quality than ever before.

Yes, unlike previous Super Bowls, FOX will broadcast the game in 4K HDR. This means that spectators who know how to watch the game in this high-resolution standard will have a better, more visually appealing Super Bowl experience (which may make up for their team losing or missing the game). And it would also move 4K TVs and antennas ahead of the game.

However, actually preparing to watch the game in 4K is not as easy as it sounds. Of course, you'll need a 4K TV, and you'll also need to know where to watch (be sure to check out our guide to finding a live stream of the Super Bowl).

There are many ways to watch the Super Bowl on streaming services, but only one offers the big game in 4K. That service is FuboTV, a streaming service designed for sports fans.

That said, check with your Internet provider to make sure you're getting the 25 Mbps or higher download rate that Netflix recommends for 4K content; you'll need a higher rate if you're inviting friends who know your Wi-Fi password to enjoy the game.

Chances are good that your cable or satellite provider supports 4K broadcasts; if you use DirecTV, Comcast Xfinity, Verizon Fios, or Optimum, you should have no problem getting 4K to your home. [Check with your provider to see if your set-top box supports 4K and/or HDR.

of course, we need to clarify what 4K HDR actually means in the context of this year's Super Bowl.

Unfortunately, FOX is not filming the game in native 4K. Instead, they capture it in 1080p HDR and upscale it to 4K.

It's not necessarily the end of the world, as upscaled 4K footage is still better than 1080p footage, but not as good as native 4K footage designed to be viewed in 4K.

That said, 4K TVs offer a better visual experience than 1080p sets, so if you have the choice between the two, go with 4K.

And then there are the ads that play during the broadcast. It will probably be broadcast in 1080p, so don't expect Mr. Peanut's memorial service to be in dynamic HDR.

So what do you actually need to watch Super Bowl 2020 in 4K? That will be a little more difficult than you might expect.

Most importantly, you need a 4K TV. We have tested numerous 4K TVs and recommend the best 4K TVs; if you don't have an HDR-capable 4K TV, you are out of luck. Plain and simple.

You also need something to get the 4K transmission into your home and onto your TV. The best TV antennas we have chosen are the fastest route because they can get the signal out of thin air. Alternatively, if you already have a smart TV with 4K-enabled apps or a 4K streaming device, you can take advantage of more features.

Fortunately, there are plenty of 4K set-top boxes at your disposal.

Roku devices may not have Fox channels, however, as a dispute between Fox and Roku may get rid of all of the network's apps before the big game.
