As January draws to a close, PlayStation fans are eagerly awaiting news of the rumored PS5 launch event in February. However, Sony remains silent, with less than a year to go until the PlayStation 5 hits store shelves.

Rumors about a February 2020 launch event for the PS5 began heating up in late 2019 and reached a fever pitch last month. Sony's official PS4 coming-out party took place on February 21, 2013, so it's not unreasonable to expect Sony to fully unleash its next-generation console at a similar time in 2020.

The most popular PS5 release date rumor is the possibility of a February 5 event, which was first brought to light by a 4chan post that later surfaced on Reddit. However, the anonymous message board post does not seem to be backed by inside information, and given that February 5 is only a few days away, it is unlikely that Sony would announce a launch event with little or no advance notice.

Another popular theory is that Sony will announce the PS5 on February 29, as a savvy Redditor discovered that the Sony Hall venue in New York City is "closed for a private event" on that date. . Anyone can book a private event on the Sony Hall website. However, it is not hard to imagine Sony using Sony Hall for a major PS5 launch, especially after the closing of the PlayStation Theater in Times Square (RIP, still unforgettable) where the PS4 Pro was unveiled in September 2016.

Although a bit silly, there is another theory that is making the rounds on the Internet. Since Sony announced PlayStation Meeting 2013 on January 31, 2013, some fans on Reddit believe they could do the same on January 31 of this year. This is a day away, so we should know soon anyway.

Adding to the speculation of a PS5 launch event is the fact that Sony will skip E3 2020. This makes it even more likely that a dedicated PS5 event will be held. But when?

Microsoft has already fully unveiled the Xbox Series X at The Game Awards 2019 in December, leaving the ball in Sony's court to fully reveal its next-generation console. Then again, given that the PS4 has sold over 100 million units compared to the Xbox One's estimated 43 million, perhaps the PS5 is already poised to win, no matter when or how Sony unveils it.
