The new Motorola Razr video says don't worry about "bumps" on the screen

Anyone who has read even once in the past 12 months about foldable phones knows that the flexible displays that give them their distinctive capabilities are neither perfect nor rugged. But this official video warning future users of the Motorola Razr is raising some eyebrows.

The resurrected clamshell, which went up for pre-order on January 26, has had a special how-to video series produced for its launch to teach users how to take advantage of it. The "Caring for Your Razr" video (via The Verge), which can be viewed below, features an on-screen scene in which the user says, "The screen is made to bend, and bumps and lumps are normal."

Most of the tips Motorola offers are pretty pointless, such as wiping water droplets off the screen, avoiding sharp objects, not using a screen protector, and keeping the phone closed when putting it in your pocket, but basically, "bumps are nothing to worry about." It's refreshing to us.

In the first version of Samsung's Galaxy Fold, and in the revised version, the display defect was the final death sentence for the groundbreaking but flawed smartphone. But apparently the Razr may contain these flaws, even if they are not the ones to worry about; hands-on with the Razr, one could not easily find the folds that cause the phone to fold in two, nor could one see these bumps, but Moto clearly seems to think they are common enough that they feel the need to warn people.

We can take this news as a positive: Motorola is being honest with its users about what to expect when they get a new phone, which is preferable to a company that tries to ignore problems until users start reporting them. But this is still a $1,500 phone, and users may expect something without such glaring mechanical problems.

One can only hope that early Razr users are forgiving and that these lumps don't detract too much from the experience. However, when we look at the Razr again for a full review, we will pay a lot of attention to how these screen issues affect the experience.
