Netflix is making an animated Witcher movie. The Witcher has been a huge success for Netflix, and according to Netflix, the fantasy drama is the most-watched series in the streaming service's history (with some, uh, interesting statistics).

So it's no surprise that the streaming giant wants to continue the Witcher buzz with a spin-off movie. Meanwhile, Season 2 of The Witcher is already in the works and will likely be released in 2021.

"'The Witcher': Nightmare of the Wolves" will depict "a powerful new threat facing the continent."

First reported by fan site Redanian Intelligence, Netflix confirmed the news on Twitter:

"The Witcher" showrunner Lauren Schmidt Hisrich has teamed up with screenwriter Bo Demayo to produce " The Witcher" to produce: Nightmare of the Wolves Demayo Demayo wrote season 1 episode 3, "Betrayer Moon." The animated film will be produced by Studio Mir, the studio behind "The Legend of Korra" and Netflix's "Voltron: Legendary Defender."

Netflix has not revealed a release date for The Witcher: Nightmare of the Wolf As Hisrich revealed on Twitter, the project has been in the works for a long time:

An animated film of The Witcher is scheduled for mid-2021. It is unclear if it will be completed and distributed on Netflix before Season 2, which is scheduled for mid-2021.

Casting for The Witcher: Nightmare of the Wolves has not yet been announced.

Netflix has not stated whether the cast will play characters from the animated version, including Henry Cavill as Geralt of Livia, Anya Charotra as Yenefer, and Freya Allan as Siri.

All we know about The Witcher is about Nightmare of the Wolf: All we know about The Witcher: Nightmare of the Wolf is that it will explore "a powerful new threat facing the continent."

Fans speculate that the wolf referred to in the title of the animated film refers to Geralt, also known as the White Wolf and a member of the Wolf School.

Since The Witcher is a Netflix hit, the streaming service may want to expand the world beyond the current characters and timeline. The animated film might delve into young Geralt's training, follow the adventures of supporting characters, or travel to a previously unseen corner of the continent.

Not only that, there may be more Witcher films and spin-offs. Executive producer Tomek Baginski teases, "We're planning a few more interesting surprises between seasons, but I won't say what they will be."
