Motorola1,500Motorola Razr gets 2/6 release date to the next delay

Update 10:22 a.m. ET: Added pricing and availability of the Motorola Razr at Verizon. [The launch date for the foldable Motorola Razr, which was postponed last month, has been set again. The foldable phone will go on sale February 6, and interested parties can pre-order the new Razr this Sunday (January 26) at Verizon, Walmart, and Motorola's online store.

When Motorola announced that it was delaying the Razr's original December 26 pre-order date and January launch, we were somewhat concerned, citing "high demand." After all, foldable phones have not had the glorious start the industry had hoped for, with myriad problems with the Galaxy Fold and the Huawei Mate X's unavailability outside of China.

With its relatively inexpensive $1,500 tag and iconic design, the Razr will likely be the first foldable to reach many consumers.

Pre-orders for the Motorola Razr will open on Verizon on January 26 at 12:01 AM EST. Verizon will allow customers to purchase this foldable phone in installments.

Transfers can save up to $700 on the Motorola Razor at Verizon. They can get up to $500 in credit for eligible trade-ins, plus $200 in the form of a prepaid MasterCard for wireless service transfers. Existing Verizon customers can receive up to $300 in discounts from Motorola Razr when they trade in their phones. These trade-in credits will appear on your bill and be spread out over 24 months.

In our hands-on review of the Razr at Motorola's launch event in November, we were impressed with the Razr's sturdy-looking build and hinge, the spacious 6.2-inch display when unfolded, and the convenience of the Quick View external screen, which allows for a quick glance.

However, the low resolution for the size of the OLED panel (only 2142 x 876) and the Snapdragon 710 chipset (inferior silicon compared to the processors in today's leading four-digit Android flagships) give us some hesitation.

For what it's worth, Motorola seems confident that the Razr will stand the test of time. The complex hinge mechanism, which includes a movable stainless steel plate supporting the screen, took four years and 26 iterations to develop.

Of course, we cannot truly assess the durability of this device until we do a proper review in a few weeks. At the very least, the fact that Motorola supports free display replacement for one year after owning every Razr unit should give confidence to those enthusiastic about this experimental phone.

The Motorola Razr's new launch date falls five days before Samsung's next Unpacked event. The new Galaxy S20 is expected to be the star of that show, but it is also possible that Samsung will announce the Galaxy Z Flip, the follow-up to the Galaxy Fold.

The device is expected to have a flip phone design similar to the Razr and will cost less than the Fold's $1,980. the Galaxy Z Flip may also have a larger battery and faster charging than the Razr and is unlikely to have a chin like the Razr design It is. Perhaps Motorola is aiming to stay ahead of its folding phone rivals.

Stay tuned for our evaluation review of the Motorola Razr, which we will bring you in the coming weeks.
