Galaxy S20 is Losing Samsung's Most Unique Camera Technology (Report)

Samsung's Galaxy S20 is currently the subject of numerous rumors, including one that says that Samsung's staple camera technology will not migrate from the Galaxy S10 to the S20.

Max Weinbach, who is currently getting a bit excited about the S20 leaks, posted a new tweet that clearly claims that the next Galaxy S series phones will abandon some of this unique camera technology:

The dual aperture allowed Samsung to get more mileage out of the 12MP camera sensor it has been using in phones since the Galaxy S9. When activated, the two halves of a small plastic aperture are inset over the sensor and two f-stop settings are selectable. This was intended to improve camera performance in diverse lighting conditions and help with photographic effects such as bokeh, but other smartphone manufacturers have not followed suit, and while the S9 and S10 photos were very good, they were by no means class leading, if only because of the variable aperture.

A second missing piece of technology was leaked in reply to Weinbach's first tweet. Another notable leaker, Ice Universe, added, "And S20U kills Dual-PD," S20U presumably referring to the rumored range-topping S20 Ultra model, and Dual-PD stands for Dual phase-detection, a photo another feature that helps with focusing.

Samsung is rumored to be putting a huge 108MP camera on the S20 Ultra, perhaps compensating for the dual aperture and phase detection with a megapixel overload. However, the S20 and S20 Plus are said to have a 12MP main sensor, so it is unclear if this news applies to these as well.

While the camera will probably be a key feature, there are other reasons to be interested in Samsung's new phones. You can read what we know so far on the Galaxy S20 rumor page. This page is regularly updated with the latest news, rumors, and leaks.
