Google's next mid-range smartphone could be its most advanced yet. A newly discovered series of Google device codenames hint at the possibility of multiple Pixel 4a models launching this year.

The discovery was made by XDA Developers, who discovered the codenames through the Android Open Source Project after receiving a tip from Twitter user aks29. As with previous Google Pixel releases, all of these possible new models have codenames associated with fish, adding weight to the possibility that they are the next Pixel.

One of the potential new devices is codenamed "sunfish" and may be powered by Qualcomm's Snapdragon 730 processor, which is found in other mid-range smartphones including the Redmi K30 and Samsung Galaxy A71. xda Developers believe the phone could be a standard 4G-enabled Pixel 4a.

Here's where it gets interesting. One of the other codenamed devices, "redfin," is likely intended to be a Snapdragon 765 GPU featuring an integrated 5G modem, enabling 5G in a wider range of mid-range devices. If indeed a 5G version of the Pixel 4a is coming, it could be one of the most affordable 5G phones.

Google's flagship Pixel devices are typically released in the fall, and the company debuted its mid-range line in spring 2019 with the $399 Pixel 3a and $479 Pixel 3a XL.

We expect Google to follow suit this spring with the Pixel 4a and Pixel 4a XL, which, based on previous leaks and renders, could feature a punch-hole camera display, square rear camera bump, headphone jack, and fingerprint reader. All of these features, plus 5G support, could make the Pixel 4a series one of the best budget phones even better.
