The first Galaxy S20 benchmark just leaked and it doesn't look good

Performance figures purportedly showing the Galaxy S20's performance have appeared on benchmarking site Geekbench, but they are not very impressive images. But there's no need to panic about Samsung's upcoming phone just yet.

This new Geekbench posting shows a device labeled the SM-G981U, which GSMArena identifies as the smallest of the trio of S20 models Samsung is reportedly working on. The device is powered by a Qualcomm system-on-chip (likely a Snapdragon 865) and runs Android 10. The device recorded a single-core result of 561 and a multi-core score of 2,358 in Geekbench 5.1, which measures overall performance.

These numbers are... Not so good. Samsung's Galaxy Note 10 with last year's Snapdragon 855 chipset had a single-core score of 746 and a multi-core score of 2,640 when we tested it for our Galaxy Note 10 review; the OnePlus 7 Pro also had 744 and 2,802 scores, respectively, that outperformed this new device.

More importantly, the supposed Galaxy S20 numbers shown in Geekbench are far from the numbers we saw when we tested the Snapdragon 865-powered reference device in December. In that test, Snapdragon 865 devices averaged a multicore score of 3,463, which is on par with Apple's pace-setting A13 Bionic processor. The Snapdragon 865 device posted a single-core score of 934 in our tests, far exceeding the number just posted on Geekbench.

This has led tech blogs to speculate that the Galaxy S20 models in the new Geekbench results may be pre-production models that have not yet been optimized to fully utilize the Snapdragon chipset. Handset manufacturers perform a variety of optimizations, some of which focus on performance, while others adjust efficiency to extend battery life.

Adding to the speculation are results posted on Geekbench earlier this week regarding another rumored Galaxy S20 model, purportedly the Galaxy S20 Plus, with a single-core score of 923 and a multi-core score of 32617. These numbers are fairly close to what we saw in the Snapdragon 865 benchmark and are probably a more reasonable expectation when the Galaxy S20 is unveiled at Samsung's press event on February 11.

The latest Geekbench numbers provide one interesting tidbit of information about Samsung's upcoming phone. The model that is producing lackluster results apparently has 12 GB of RAM. This corroborates Galaxy S20 specs leaked earlier this week, suggesting that Samsung is increasing the amount of memory in the Galaxy S20.
