According to a new report, that will continue with this year's OnePlus 8, but it looks like another carrier will be joining the mix.

Android Police reports that sources familiar with OnePlus' plans say that when the OnePlus 8 arrives later this year, it will be available from Verizon in the US. If true, it will be the first OnePlus phone to be available on Verizon, although recent models have been compatible with Verizon's network.

We have been hearing about Verizon's involvement with OnePlus phones in 2020 since last September, and Android Police also reported on the story.

Until now, T-Mobile has been the only carrier to offer most of OnePlus' releases since the launch of the OnePlus 6T in 2018. A notable exception is the OnePlus 7 Pro 5G, a 5G-enabled device sold through Sprint.

Compatibility with newly launched 5G networks is related to the OnePlus 8 news, and this latest report claims that the phone will include 5G compatibility, specifically working on Verizon's millimeter wave-based 5G network. Verizon's 5G service is currently operating in more than 30 cities, and our tests show speeds of about 1 Gbps, but 5G coverage in these cities is not as extensive and is usually not available indoors.

The presence of 5G would seem to confirm that the OnePlus 8 will be powered by Qualcomm's Snapdragon 865 processor and offer 5G connectivity. However, this is not so far-fetched, as OnePlus phones have traditionally been powered by Qualcomm's latest chipsets. For example, the OnePlus 7T is powered by the Snapdragon 855 Plus system-on-chip.

Verizon will not necessarily be the only carrier to get a new OnePlus phone this year; Android Police reports that T-Mobile, for example, is currently offering both the OnePlus 7T and OnePlus 7T Pro 5G McLaren on its newly launched nationwide 5G network, so it would be surprising if this means the end of T-Mobile's relationship with the handset maker.

In 2019, the OnePlus phone launch included multiple models: a regular phone and a Pro version of that phone. However, only one of those versions usually came to the U.S. The OnePlus 7 Pro arrived in this country last spring, while the 7T went on sale in the fall.
