The new name of the Galaxy S20 has been confirmed along with a 120hz display (report)

Yesterday's rumor was that Samsung would not use a 120Hz screen on the Galaxy S20 (or Galaxy S11). Today, reliable Samsung leaker Ice Universe has corrected the record and confirmed the name of the new line.

"It has been confirmed that 2K 120Hz (S20 display) will not be canceled," Ice Universe said on Twitter. He had posted a tweet the day before that (which was quickly deleted) pointing out that the Galaxy S11/S20 may not use this display technology. That tweet was quickly deleted.

He also posted this matrix, confirming the name and main features of the new model:

Apparently there will be three models again: instead of the S11, Samsung's new flagship series will be called the Galaxy S20. Ice Universe itself said that Samsung decided to jump to this name because the new phone is so much better and represents a "new beginning."

According to Korean newspaper Ajunews, Samsung CEO Dj Koh reportedly confirmed the name change in a private meeting at CES. This is also in line with earlier rumors that Samsung will switch to a year designation: the 20 will correspond to 2020, the S21 will appear next year, and so on.

According to Ice Universe, these phones are said to be branded Galaxy S20, Galaxy S20+, and Galaxy 20 Ultra.

The matrix above seems to indicate that the Galaxy S20 is "lightweight," which probably means low specs as well as low weight like the iPhone 11. the Galaxy S20 is "mainstream" and this is the core S20, In other words, we can assume that this is a phone that will likely be parallel to the iPhone 11 Pro. And finally, the Galaxy S20 Ultra, like the iPhone 11 Pro Max, would be the phone with the largest screen and best specs in the pack.

And then, of course, there is the Bloom. This is rumored to be a foldable Samsung like the Razr, effectively halving the size of the S20 when closed; the word "Future" suggests that it will be announced but not released until later this year. Or perhaps this means that Samsung sees the foldable phone as the future of cell phones.

In another tweet, Ice Universe mentions a technology that will allow users concerned about power consumption to manually select 60Hz refresh. This addresses the concerns of many who argue that 120Hz is not of much benefit to the majority of users.

Displays that refresh at 120 times per second consume more power than displays that refresh only 60 times. Furthermore, refreshing at 120 Hz adds nothing to the experience unless what is being displayed is moving at 120 frames per second (or more than 60 frames per second). Thus, the benefit is limited to the actual user interface, which is said to be ultra-smooth, and some games that can achieve that frame rate. No video streaming service delivers video at that frame rate (and synthetic video smoothing technology sucks anyway).

That's why Samsung allows consumers to choose their refresh speed." He notes, "If users want a smooth, flawless display, they can choose 2K 120Hz." However, manufacturers have no reason to cancel 2K 120Hz by force."

Apparently, Ice Universe is very excited about Samsung's new model and is looking forward to February 11. I don't share their enthusiasm about the S20, but I certainly can't wait to see the rumored Galaxy Bloom.
