Samsung Unveils first AR glasses at CES2020

Samsung is ahead of Apple. Maybe by a few years.

At CES 2020, Samsung showed off its first augmented reality glasses. No name, price, or release date has been set, but that's because it was shown as part of a concept demo of how AR could be used to improve fitness.

The demo was designed to show how Samsung's GEMS system (short for Gait Enhancing and Muscle Strengthening) could be used in conjunction with AR trainers.

When the person on stage at the Samsung demo put on the glasses, an AR avatar appeared in front of the wearer with virtual workout equipment. She then led the Samsung representative through a lunge exercise. This demo was reminiscent of what Microsoft showed with Hololens 2, but the Samsung glasses were more compact than Microsoft's headset.

Bloomberg reports that Samsung teased AR glasses at CES, saying that while it wants to "succeed where Google Glass failed," it is also "working to minimize dizziness."

According to Bloomberg, in addition to aiding fitness, Samsung's AR glasses will "enable video experiences like teleportation, while also augmenting real-world gaming."

Returning to the demonstration at CES, AR avatars can answer questions, show appropriate techniques, and offer tips and encouragement. The results of the workout are tabulated and analyzed, and can be viewed through a cell phone and perhaps AR glasses.

The overall hype was that the AR glasses and GEMS system would turn any room into a fitness studio. However, it is clear that Samsung is developing AR glasses for multiple applications.

We will report back as soon as we know more.
