Fisk's new all-electric SUV is cheaper than any Tesla

Electric car maker Fisker may have been inactive for a few years, but it is back after a long absence with the unveiling of a new SUV that will cost less than the Tesla Model 3 if all goes according to plan.

It's called Ocean and has been known to be coming for some time, but today Fisker unveiled the crossover's final design and ambitious price at a private event in Los Angeles. The vehicle will be on display at CES 2020, which opens on Tuesday, January 7.

The Fisker Ocean will start at $37,499 when it goes on sale in late 2021. Factoring in the $7,500 federal tax credit for electric vehicles, Fisker will be able to offer the Ocean for less than $30,000. Interested parties can reserve one now via Fisker's mobile app, but those who order now will not receive their vehicle until 2022.

Fisker also offers flexible leases on Ocean. Leases can be for 1 month, 8 months, 22 months, or "several years" and include 30,000 miles per year.

If all that sounds too good to be true, well, we've been here before with Fisker. The automaker went bankrupt in 2013, selling its assets, including the iconic Karma electric sports car design, to a Chinese auto parts supplier. The new Karma, which manufactures the Ocean, is the true successor to the Karma.

Fisker claims that the Ocean is "the most sustainable car in the world. The reason for this is its solar roof, which he estimates can store enough electricity to give drivers an extra 1,000 miles per year. This equates to about 83 miles per month, which is not a very impressive figure, but every mile or two helps.

The carpet is made of nylon from fishing net waste, the interior is made of polyester and recycled plastic, and other surfaces are polycarbonate and polyurethane. Fisker states that the Ocean's interior is completely vegan, but the presentation only provides images of the exterior.

The material may reveal how Fisker intends to market the Ocean and generate revenue. Furthermore, if a car needs repairs, it must be requested through the app, through Fisker itself. In addition, a representative from the manufacturer would pick up the car and return it.

All Ocean models are equipped with what Fisker calls an "extended range" battery, capable of driving 250 to 300 miles on a single charge. For reference, the standard range Tesla Model 3 still has 250 miles, and the Tesla Model Y compact crossover can go 300 miles standard if you choose the least expensive rear-wheel drive model (the dual motor version is about 20 miles shorter).

Fisker's return to the market undoubtedly has the high-tech look, specs, and features befitting an upstart electric vehicle manufacturer entering a new decade. However, as is often the case in this business, the real test will be whether the company can deliver Ocean for its customers beyond 2021.
