Apple can make gaming5,000 gaming PCs — here's why it makes sense

Is Apple trying to enter the gaming PC space and compete with Alienware and Razer? Rumors of a new supply chain seem to suggest it.

According to Economic Daily (via TechRadar), the Cupertino tech giant may be working on an "e-sports PC" that could cost as much as $5,000. The report states that the PC could be either an all-in-one desktop in the vein of the iMac or a large gaming laptop in the vein of the Razer Blade 17 Pro.

Apple's rumored gaming Mac could be announced as early as this June at Apple's annual developer conference (WWDC) and released next year.

A dedicated gaming PC would be new territory for Apple, but the move would not be entirely surprising: the iPhone maker will launch a $5/month subscription service in 2019 that will deliver over 100 games playable on iOS, Mac, and Apple TV, called Apple The company launched Arcade, its largest gaming offensive to date. The service includes titles from Sega, Ubisoft, Warner Bros. and Capcom, and Apple has already established relationships with major AAA publishers.

Apple is also no stranger to high-end desktop hardware, starting at $5,999 and configurable up to a whopping $52,199 with a 28-core CPU, 1.5TB of RAM, dual Radeon Duo GPUs, and a 4TB SSD, the new Mac Pro has just been announced.

Apple is one of the few major players in the laptop space that does not have a dedicated gaming line, while rivals like Dell, HP, Acer, and Asus all offer a variety of gaming laptops at multiple prices. Therefore, a gaming-specific MacBook could allow Apple to enter a whole new market and overcome the stigma that Macs are not suitable for gaming.

Many popular titles such as Rocket League, Fortnite, and World of Warcraft are Mac compatible, but hot topics like Apex Legends, Red Dead Redemption 2, and Call of Duty: Modern Warfare games have been conspicuously absent. However, a Mac dedicated to gaming might encourage more major developers to join macOS.

Like the Apple rumor, this gaming PC speculation should be taken with a grain of salt. If Apple is indeed going to announce a gaming Mac at WWDC, it should be announced in the next few months.
