Almost eight years after Disney's initial announcement, a release date has finally been set. As confirmed by the recent trailer, Cruella will be released in US and UK cinemas on May 28, 2021.

The film was originally scheduled to be released in December 2020, but was delayed due to the pandemic. However, as revealed at Disney's most recent Investor Day event, "Cruella" will be released in cinemas, not Disney Plus.

In 2016, it was announced that Cruella de Vil, one of the most iconic villains in the Disney universe, will be played by "La La Land" star Emma Stone herself.

Disney later also announced that Academy Award winner Emma Thompson would play another leading role as the Baroness.

The official trailer for Cruella was released on February 17, 2021. Since then, it has been viewed nearly 10 million times on YouTube.

Initially, the trailer shows a young redheaded Cruella de Ville entering a clothing store in 1970s Central London, where she presumably meets a baroness. As the film progresses, however, Cruella gradually descends into madness, becoming more eccentric and rocking her iconic black and white look at what appears to be an upper-class social event.

Also, things don't seem to be going too well for Cruella, given that the trailer includes several shots of her hotwiring a car and engaging in a high-speed car chase. Not to mention a shot of her riding off on a scooter in tears.

According to Disney's announcement, Cruella's film is set in 1970s London, "amidst the punk rock revolution" and con artist Estella (played by Emma Stone) is "determined to make a name for herself with her designs."

The girl becomes friends with a couple of thieves who are also "mischievous." This lovely group would later lead an adventurous life in London.

"One day, Estella's fashion talents catch the eye of Baroness von Hermann, a legendary figure in the destructively chic and frighteningly exclusive fashion world. But their relationship triggers events and revelations that cause Estella to develop a wicked side and become the boisterous, fashionable, and vengeful Cruella.

And while it has already been confirmed that the new Cruella film will be a prequel to 101 Dalmatians rather than a reboot, Disney has yet to reveal a timeline; judging from the much older version of Cruella seen in 101 Dalmatians, the new Cruella could be at least 20 years removed from the original Disney animated film.

If so, it is highly unlikely that our beloved characters like Roger, Pongo, Perdita, and the adorable 15 puppies will appear. What is interesting is that the cast list includes Emily Beecham (one of the main characters in "101 Doggies") as Anita, and I have no idea if Disney really intends to connect the plots in the new film. I was not surprised to hear that [The Devil Wears Prada] screenwriter Aline Brosh McKenna wrote an early draft of the script before handing it off to [Fifty Shades of Grey] Kelly Marcel."

Screenplay writing was then passed on to Jez Butterworth for "Ford vs Ferrari," Dana Fox for "How to Be Single," Steve Zisis for "Togetherness," and Tony McNamara for "Favourite."

According to a December 2018 announcement, the Cruella film will be directed by Craig Gillespie (I, Tonya). It was also confirmed that Kristin Barr ("Christopher Robin," 2018) will produce along with Marc Platt ("La La Land," 2016) and Andrew Gunn.
