This month, the Amazon Fire TV Stick (and Cube, for that matter) will finally fill one of the most curiously missing applications: the 2020 sale to NBCUniversal's Fandango of the former Wal-Mart-owned movie and It's Vudu, a TV streaming app.

The arrival of Vudu opens up another way to buy or rent digital movies and TV shows on Amazon; Vudu's library of over 150,000 movies and shows also includes over 10,000 free titles.

The Vudu app may not be available on your Fire TV device at this time since the app has one of those staggered rollouts; if you search for Vudu and don't see it, check back later this month.

When we checked how Roku and Fire TV stacked up to the missing apps, Vudu was one of the latter two notable missing services; Fire TV still lacks Peacock (launching nationwide in July 2020). Peacock's lack of a Fire TV app will become more pronounced in the coming months as WWE Network content disappears in the US as it is absorbed by Peacock.

Vudu is not one of the giants of the video-on-demand streaming service market, but according to the press release announcing its arrival, it recorded "double-digit year-over-year growth in new accounts in 2020."

The free movies and shows offered by Vudu will help Fire TV owners expand their selection of what to watch without paying. In addition, those who have purchased something on Vudu on another device will have those purchases unlocked.
