The Samsung Galaxy Z Fold3 is set to be released this fall — here's why

If you're worried that Samsung's Galaxy Z Fold 3 will never happen, let us put your mind at ease.

A recently discovered trademark application (via LetsGoDigital) shows that Samsung has filed for protection of the "Galaxy Z" name in Australia, which is also documented by the EU Intellectual Property Office. Furthermore, the type of trademark means that Samsung may apply the name outside of its folding phone lineup.

The Galaxy Z name was first used last year for the Samsung Galaxy Z Flip, and later for the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 2. Now that Samsung is producing multiple foldable phones, it makes sense to unify the two devices under one name.

The patent applies to "Category 9" products, which includes but does not specify smartphones. This could mean that future foldable products other than cell phones, such as laptops and tablets, will use the Galaxy Z name.

Samsung's foldable product of the year is expected to appear in the fall, along with a newly trademarked name. Presumably, the Galaxy Z Fold 3 and Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 3, as well as a less expensive model called the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold Lite, could be introduced.

One of the big rumors about these phones is their compatibility with the S Pen. This has Galaxy Note fans worried if the life of the "phablet" phone is limited, now Samsung has a new breed of flagship phones to work with the stylus. We should still get the Samsung Galaxy Note 21 this year, but after next year is less certain.

Samsung has already stitched together a list of the best folding phones. Especially since the Google Pixel Fold and iPhone Flip are rumored to be future threats.

So we are eager to see exactly how Samsung plans to upgrade both foldable models later this year. So stay tuned for Tom's Guide.
