Google's Pixel 6 Secret Weapon Could Have Just Leaked

Last year, Google took a risk by ditching Qualcomm's top-of-the-line Snapdragon chip for the Pixel 5. Instead, it opted for the mid-range Snapdragon 765G, which enabled 5G connectivity while keeping costs down.

Assuming Google has the same plans for the Pixel 6, we could be seeing for the first time a SoC that runs the show; Telegram channel XiaomiUI (which, contrary to its name, is not affiliated with the electronics maker) has a Snapdragon 775 top leaked what appears to be a Qualcomm document outlining the top-end specs of the Snapdragon 775.

Separately, sources at XDA Developers confirmed the contents of the leak, but added that the image shared was a bit outdated. Therefore, the following broad details are believed to be confirmed, but there may be some changes in the finished chip.

The Snapdragon 775 and 775G (the G version has slightly better gaming performance) appear to be manufactured on a 5nm process, improving on the 7nm approach used in the 765. This should mean both stronger performance and greater efficiency in reducing battery drain.

In addition to this, the Snapdragon 775 chip is set to support 3,200MHz LPDDR5 or 2,400MHz LPDDR4X RAM and up to UFS 3.1 storage. The chip's Spectra 570 ISP can handle up to three 28MP cameras simultaneously and appears to support 4K video recording at 60 fps. mmWave 5G support is also built in, as expected with the chipset debuting in 2021.

These are all positives, but we'll have to wait and see how much faster this chip is than its predecessor to see if this is the home run we've come to expect from Snapdragon 765-powered devices like the Pixel 5 and OnePlus Nord, responded snappily to most tasks and got warm reviews from us. While technically not as powerful as Snapdragon 865-powered devices like Samsung's Galaxy S20 (not to mention Snapdragon 888-powered devices like the Galaxy S21), we felt they were more than powerful enough for most people's needs.

There is no reason to think the same will not apply to the Snapdragon 775, and we can be optimistic about the state of mid-range devices in 2021. Hopefully, we will get some idea of release dates and pricing in the near future.
