The ultra-wide-angle camera on the iPhone allows for creative photography, but the iPhone 13 will likely feature two major upgrades to make this lens even sharper.

Apple is expected to introduce an upgraded ultra-wide-angle lens for the iPhone 13, according to a new report. This lens will feature sensor-shift OIS (Optical Image Stabilization) and autofocus (AF).

According to DigiTimes, Japanese voice coil motor (VCM) suppliers have asked their Taiwanese subcontractors to expand production by 40% by the end of June. Both Alps Alpine and Mizusumi are major suppliers of the iPhone 12 Pro Max.

Interestingly, the Taiwan-based manufacturer will only expand production to 80% of what both Alps Alpine and Mizusmi are requesting, in case orders end up lower than expected.

The anticipated increase in production will be used for the rear cameras of the iPhone models, which are expected to be released in late 2021.

Sensor-shift OIS is a system in which the sensor itself floats, allowing the sensor to move against the motion of a person's hand. This type of image stabilization is useful when taking zoomed pictures. Sensor-shift OIS was first introduced in the iPhone 12 Pro Max telephoto lens; with the iPhone 13 Pro or Pro Max, it appears that Apple plans to introduce this technology in other sensors as well.

In the iPhone 13, Sensor Shift OIS is expected to be implemented in both the wide and ultra-wide lenses. It is unclear if the same technology will be implemented in the front-facing camera.

This is consistent with a January report that suggested that the upcoming iPhone 13 will also feature Sensor Shift OIS in the wide lenses of other iPhone 13 models. These lenses would also have autofocus.

Other rumors about wide and ultra-wide lenses have popped up here and there over the past month. The big one was that the iPhone 13's ultra-wide lens will have an f/1.8 aperture instead of f/2.4. While this number is small, it means that the aperture, and thus the amount of light hitting the sensor, will be larger.
