Earlier this year we caught a glimpse of an own-brand Android TV streaming stick from Walmart. Now, what appears to be an Onn Android TV UHD Streaming box has appeared online, and according to 9to5Google, there is a new listing on Walmart's website.

The product page has since disappeared, but the streaming device was listed for $29.98 despite being out of stock. However, Walmart's announcement of its own Android TV device strongly suggests that it is trying to get into the streaming game.

Competing with Rokus and Amazon Fire streaming devices is certainly no easy task, but what exactly does Walmart's Onn Android TV box bring to the table?According to Walmart's listing, the Onn Android TV device will stream in 4K streaming at 4K and also offers "Dolby audio."

Details are being withheld, but 4K streaming for under $30 is an attractive proposition; it would undercut products like the Amazon Fire TV Stick 4K and Roku Streaming Stick Plus, both around $50.

The device runs Android TV, uses HDMI, and has what appears to be a Google Assistant-enabled remote control with an ensemble of native buttons for playing Netflix, YouTube, Disney Plus, and HBO Max.

The Onn Android TV streaming box looks visually bland, as one would expect from a budget device, although according to 9to5 Google, the design follows the nondescript design of Google's ADT-3 developer device, Walmart's internal brand name, Onn, is engraved at the top.

Whether the Onn Android TV box is robust enough to carve out a niche for itself among other streamers remains to be seen, whether or not it will challenge the mighty Amazon.

Of course, streaming hardware is now a much more open field. Once the preserve of a few major players, streaming has now normalized to the point where companies can put out streaming cubes for under $30 and see if they stick. Even more so when Wal-Mart stocks them and many retailers have the freedom to pile new streaming gadgets high on the shelves.
