Elon Musk asked his followers If Tesla Should Accept Dogecoin — and they said so

Judging by the results of Elon Musk's Twitter poll on cryptocurrencies, Dogecoin may soon be used to pay for Tesla electric cars.

Billionaire Tesla and SpaceX CEO Elon Musk has long been one of Dogecoin's biggest supporters, repeatedly pushing the wonders of Dogecoin on social media and declaring himself a "Dogefather." And now he seems to be exploring further options to legitimize the cryptocurrency, asking his 53 million followers if they want the option to buy a Tesla EV with Doge.

Musk posted the poll on Twitter yesterday (May 11).

The poll just closed, but a total of 3,922,516 votes were cast, of which 78.2% said they wanted Tesla to accept Dogecoin.

This does not mean that Tesla will definitely go through with the plan, but there is plenty of other evidence that it could happen. For starters, Tesla began accepting Bitcoin as payment in March and made more money from cryptocurrency sales than car sales in Q1 2021.

Additionally, on Monday SpaceX announced its DOGE-1 mission to the moon. This is a Falcon 9 rocket that will carry a satellite payload into lunar orbit for the price of... As you might imagine, it will be paid for in Dogecoin.

As SpaceX Vice President of Commercial Sales Tom Ocinello said in a statement, the mission will "demonstrate the application of cryptocurrency beyond Earth orbit and lay the foundation for interplanetary commerce, and we are excited to launch DOGE-1 to the Moon!"

He stated.

Musk may also feel that there is work to be done to increase Dogecoin's value following his guest hosting on SNL on Saturday (May 8).

After Musk called Dogecoin a "hustle" during the Weekend Update segment of his show, Dogecoin's value dropped more than 30%. This was the first serious drop experienced in weeks after rising to an all-time high of more than $0.70 per coin.

Given that it started at just $0.004876, the current value of about $0.50 represents an impressive growth of over 10,000% in 2021, but some question whether "memecoin" has a long-term future. [If Tesla begins accepting Doge as payment for the Tesla Roadster and the upcoming Tesla Cyber Truck, it could be the next step in securing Doge's future.
