Samsung Galaxy S22 and S22 Plus Leak reveals everything about the camera

Samsung's Galaxy S22 is expected to be the first large flagship phone of 2022, and its rumored specs have attracted a lot of attention. The latest leaks concern camera improvements for the Galaxy S22 and Galaxy S22 Pro/Plus.

The new information comes courtesy of reliable source Ice Universe and details the sensors that can be expected on the Galaxy S22 and the larger Galaxy S22 Pro. As noted in the leak, the Galaxy S22 and S22 Plus will reportedly feature a new 50MP sensor for the main camera.

It will likely be the Samsung GN5 sensor, which Samsung announced earlier this year and has already produced impressive results with the Google Pixel 6.

This camera sensor can take full 50MP shots as well as lower-resolution 12.5MP images achieved using "pixel binning." This is a software process that combines the data captured by the sensor's pixels into virtual superpixels to enhance the brightness of the image.

Both the Galaxy S21 and Galaxy S21 Plus used a 12MP main camera, so if these changes prove to be true, S22 and S22 Plus users will see a significant increase in resolution when using the full 50MP mode, and these higher-resolution cameras would see significantly brighter images in pixel binning mode, which the cameras tend to use by default.

The other camera upgrade mentioned by Ice Universe is a 10MP 3x optical zoom telephoto camera. The Galaxy S21 and S21 Plus had a higher-resolution 48MP telephoto camera, but with an inferior 3x hybrid zoom that combines digital zoom and weak optical zoom.

Finally, Ice Universe showcased two phones with a 12MP ultra-wide camera and a 10MP selfie camera. These are not a surprise, as they match the equivalent cameras on the S21 and S21 Plus. A closer look at the specs shows that these sensors appear to be exactly the same as those on the Galaxy S21. This may mean that the difference in image quality is less noticeable when taking ultra-wide angle photos or selfies, but this is not counting the computational photo upgrade.

According to previous leaks, Samsung will not hide the Galaxy S22's selfie camera under the screen. There were early rumors that Samsung would include an under-display selfie camera on the Galaxy S22, similar to the one attached to the Galaxy Z Fold 3's built-in display, as the Z Fold 3's 2MP under-display camera took some rather disappointing images.

The last thing that can be read from the IU tweet is the size of the phone: the base Galaxy S22 is 6.06" and the S22 Pro/Plus is 6.55". These are smaller than this year's equivalent models, the 6.2-inch S21 and 6.7-inch S21 Plus. This means smaller displays (and, according to other leaks, smaller battery capacity), but it also means they will fit better in smaller hands and narrower pockets, an important consideration for a smartphone.

We expect Samsung to launch the Galaxy S22 series in early 2022, but probably not at the usual time. In fact, a January launch could be that of the Galaxy S21 FE, which is suffering from a lengthy delay. Thus, recent leaks claim that the S22 launch may be delayed to February.
