The notch-free iPhone14 looks like this

It is widely accepted that the iPhone 14 will do away with the notch on the front of the iPhone display, at least on the Pro model. What is less well known, however, is what the redesigned iPhone 14 screen will look like with Face ID and a punch-hole camera below the display in place of the notch.

Developer Jeff Grossman gave us a pretty compelling look at what Apple might design for the iPhone 14 Pro model this fall. He created a mock-up screenshot showing an iPhone without a notch.

Along with rumors suggesting that Apple will include Face ID under the display, Apple watchers have been able to find a pill-shaped front camera instead of the round cutouts used on major Android competitors like the Galaxy S21 and OnePlus 10 Pro. Suggesting that it will be a cutout, Grossman's iPhone 14 mockup reflects this rumor.

The proposed look of the iPhone 14 is bound to have both proponents and detractors in equal measure. On the one hand, it is good to get back much of the screen area previously occupied by the iPhone notch. However, the pill shape is more noticeable than the round camera notch and is likely to make it more difficult to ignore the hole when playing games, watching videos, or performing other tasks that benefit from full use of the unobstructed screen.

Apple faces a unique challenge regarding the front of its phones that other phone makers need not worry too much about. Rather than simply finding a place for a front camera, Apple must ensure that all the sensors that make Face ID possible fit neatly under the iPhone's screen and function. The move to pill-shaped cutouts may have been prompted by the need to keep some sensors visible.

The iPhone 14 is expected to arrive this fall, and the more significant changes appear to be planned for the Pro model. In addition to the lack of a notch, the Pro model is said to have a 48-megapixel main wide camera and possibly a USB-C port. There are also rumors that the iPhone 14 Pro model will remain the only iPhone with a display that supports a variable refresh rate of 120 Hz.

[14] Grossman's design is far from official, and the iPhone 14 could look very different from what we see above. However, this particular mockup should serve as a reminder that the iPhone's appearance will likely be seriously revised later this year.
