Update (Jan. 7): We chose the Vivo V23 as one of the most interesting cell phones presented at CES 2022.

Mobile phones now come in a variety of colors, even the traditionally subdued Samsung Galaxy and Apple iPhone series now come in a variety of shades. But it's easy to get bored with the bold, vibrant colors of your everyday phone; not so with the Vivo V23 and V23 Pro.

That's because these new Android phones have the ability to change colors--yes, really. The Sunshine Gold model apparently changes hue completely when exposed to sunlight; after 30 seconds of doing so, the back of the phone changes from its original gold to a blue-green hue.

This is accomplished using a "fluorite AG glass design," which uses crystals that glow and change color in response to exposure to ultraviolet light, or sunlight. However, one should not expect the Stardust Black version to change.

It is in the eye of the beholder as to how attractive either color is, but the ability to change hues is a neat party trick. However, before we can judge how successful this trick is, we need to see it in action.

If you're shrugging at this, Vivo's new V-series phones have another clever feature: one is a 50MP main sensor and the other is an 8MP ultrawide sensor.

Dual selfie cameras have been seen before, notably on the OnePlus Nord and Google Pixel 3 XL and its giant display notch, but they are not a common sight. In this case, a large megapixel main lens combined with an ultra-wide camera would make for detailed selfies.

As for other camera specs, both models have a trio of snappers on the back consisting of an 8MP ultrawide lens and a 2MP macro sensor, while the V23 Pro has a 108MP main lens and the standard V23 has a 64MP camera. This is a solid megapixel count for a main camera, although the image quality of the main camera will likely depend on the computational photography and image signal processing behind the camera.

Speaking of processing, the V23 comes with the MediaTek Dimensity 920 chipset and the V23 Pro comes with the Dimensity 1200 chipset; RAM and storage are available in 8GB and 12GB, 128GB and 256GB variants, respectively.

On the display front, the V23 Pro will feature a curved 6.56-inch 1080p display with a 90 Hz refresh rate, while the V23 will feature a flat, smaller 6.44-inch display that also operates at 90 Hz.

Overall, both models seem like attractive mid-range Android devices. However, as of this writing, the two models are not scheduled to be sold in either the US or the UK. However, with regard to being able to shift colors on the fly, they could set the standard for other handsets.
