Oculus Quest3 and Oculus Quest Pro Leaks have Tipped Major Upgrades

The success of the Oculus Quest 2 has many wondering when Meta will bring out the Oculus Quest 3 or even the Oculus Quest Pro. According to a new report, Meta's next headset may be coming soon. [According to augmented reality (XR) analyst and YouTuber Brad Lynch, as reported by Android Central, the Oculus Quest Pro, currently codenamed Cambria, is expected to arrive in Q2 2022, with the headset's release in the April to June window. This is typically when Meta (the company formerly known as Facebook) holds its developer conference.

Given that Meta has renamed Oculus Quest 2 to Meta Quest 2, it is likely that the project is code-named Meta Cambria internally, as Lynch suggested in his tweet.

Lynch's report is also corroborated by Display Supply Chain Consultants (DSCC), which also claims that Meta plans to launch a "high-end headset" in 2022, DSCC reports, waved past Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg's comments at Connect 2021 that Project Cambria will "enable high-resolution color pass-through AR. The device will "push the limits of display technology and form factor" and will be based on pancake optics that allow for a slimmer form factor.

Meta has already confirmed that Project Cambria will appear in 2022, but no specific date has been given.

According to Lynch, Project Cambria is targeted to sell 3 million units and will feature a Mini LED display similar to the one on the 2021 iPad Pro. combining Mini LEDs with pancake optics that bend light "several times" to make it more thinner, lighter, and potentially wonderfully colorful VR headsets.

At last year's Connect 2021, Meta announced that Project Cambria would not be a successor to Quest 2 or Quest 3, but a "higher-end device that packs all the latest advanced technologies, including improved social presence, color pass-through, pancake optics, and more. We had already confirmed that it would be a "high-end device.

Meta also released a brief teaser video of Project Cambria last year, which looks very similar in design to the first Oculus Quest.

For Oculus Quest 3, Lynch claims that the headset will not utilize Qualcomm's Snapdragon XR3 processor, which is expected to ship in late 2023. Instead, Meta is trying to build its own chip designed for VR. And apparently, Meta wants to differentiate itself from other VR headset makers by not using Qualcomm's chip. The current Meta Quest 2 uses the Snapdragon XR2.

According to Lynch, the Quest 3 will use a uOLED display.

According to Lynch, Meta hopes to launch the Quest 3 after Connect 2023 next year. The past few Connects have been held in September and October, which means that Connect 2023 could be held around that time. If true, that would mean that Meta's next generation headset is almost two years away.
