CES2022: AMD Announces Mobile Ryzen6000Cpu and New Radeon Gpu

At CES 2022, AMD unveiled its new 6000 series mobile CPUs based on the Zen 3 Plus architecture and its latest selection of GPUs at its Product Premiere live stream event today (January 4).

AMD said the Ryzen 6000 series laptop chips are its fastest to date; manufactured on TSMC's 6nm process with clock speeds up to 5GHz, these chips are up to 1.3x faster than the 5000 series in processing speed and 2.1x faster in graphics faster. Not only that, AMD claims that the devices help achieve battery life of up to 24 hours. The chip's eight performance cores allow for 16 threads of processing power, which improves single-threaded performance by 11% and multi-threaded performance by 28% over the previous generation of chips.

The Ryzen 6000 series will be one of the first x86 processors to fully support Windows 11 security features with the integrated Microsoft Pluton security processor. In addition, the chips will feature advanced DDR5 memory, enhanced support for PCIe 4.0 and USB4, and AI noise cancellation options.

Among AMD's mobile processors, the Ryzen 9 6980HX is the company's largest and most powerful laptop CPU for 2022; unlike the U-series, the H-series is aimed at gamers and creators, not thin and light machines. In any case, the 6980HX boasts 8 cores and 16 threads, a base clock of 3.3 GHz, and a boost top speed of 5 GHz. Oddly enough, AMD claims the 6980HX is "the fastest AMD Ryzen processor ever," which is technically true since the desktop-grade Ryzen 9 5950X has a top clock speed of 4.9 GHz. However, last year's top-of-the-line Ryzen desktop CPUs will certainly outperform this year's fastest Ryzen laptop CPUs. [AMD is also adding to its mobile GPU catalog by announcing its new Radeon 6000 series laptop GPU lineup at the CES 2022 event. The company announced two new mobile GPU lineups: the Radeon RX 6000M series and the Radeon RX 6000S series.

The Radeon RX 6000M GPUs are more powerful and are designed to help laptops achieve superior gaming performance at resolutions up to 1440p. These new GPUs offer up to 7% faster performance than last year's 5000 series chips. [The AMD Radeon RX 6000S series mobile GPUs are slightly less powerful than the RX 6000M series and are designed for ultra-portable thin and light laptops; AMD says these GPUs allow for a weight of less than 4.5 pounds (light for a gaming laptop AMD predicts that the RX 6000S series notebook GPUs can help gamers play 1080p games at up to 100 fps on the highest settings in thin, lightweight devices. we won't know for sure until we get some products and test them.

Finally, AMD has added a collection of budget GPUs to its Radeon graphics portfolio.

While these additions to the Radeon lineup are far from the most powerful cards on the market, it is nice to have more options at a time when decent GPUs are becoming increasingly difficult to find at affordable prices.

According to AMD, the RX 6500 XT desktop GPU delivers 35% faster gaming performance at 1080p resolution than Nvidia's GeForce GTX 1650. This is a budget card that Nvidia released a few years ago, so it's not exactly exciting to see AMD's new (budget) GPU blow it out of the water. However, the 6500 XT (along with the lighter RX 6400 that is shipping to OEMs) is built on a 6nm process, which means it is more efficient per watt.

For the 6500 XT, AMD's spec sheet says that gamers can expect maximum-set 1080p frame rates of 108 fps on Resident Evil Village, 78 fps on Halo Infinite, and 91 fps on Apex Legends. At a price of $199, the 1080p gaming performance is solid.

The AMD Ryzen 6000 series processors are expected to be available in laptops from major brands such as Dell, Asus, and HP beginning in February 2022. The company's new mobile GPUs are expected to be available in a variety of notebooks starting in Q1 2022, with the Radeon RX 6500 XT available from retailers on January 19, 2022 for $199.
