Withings revealed 1 of the smartest scales ever

It's not surprising to see new health-related products at CES 2022, especially smart scales from Withings.

Withings already has a pedigree in both fitness tracking with its hybrid smartwatch and its popular series of smart scales, including Withings Body Plus, which has been one of the best smart scales on the market for some time, but the new Withings Body Scan aims to take body composition readings to a new level.

With a retractable handle with built-in steel electrodes, the Withings Body Scan is capable of taking 6-lead electrocardiogram (ECG) readings (scans for arrhythmia and vascular age detection) and assessing neural activity. Using bioelectrical impedance analysis, the scale can provide segmented body composition measurements, whereby the scale assesses fat and water composition in different parts of the body. [In addition, four weight sensors and 14 indium tin oxide electrodes are integrated into the scales, which increase the number of points of contact with the human body and allow measurement of multiple parts of the body. This is in contrast to other smart scales that have fewer sensors, which tend to concentrate on the lower body.

This precise body composition theoretically allows the user to figure out where potentially harmful visceral fat is located, rather than relatively harmless subcutaneous fat. Segmented body composition can also detect muscle imbalances.

The ability to assess neural activity is a notable feature. In cooperation with the French company Impeto Medical, Wising has made it possible to track sweat gland activity in a person's feet with a BodyScan scale. Problems with this activity can be a sign of nerve fiber degeneration or dysfunction and trigger a person to take action.

ECG technology, on the other hand, can use algorithms to record heart patterns and help detect abnormalities. These data can be displayed on the scale's 3.5-inch display and within the Withings Health Mate app. The scale must receive FDA approval before it can be sold in the U.S. and Europe in late 2022, but the data can be shared with medical professionals. The Withings Body Scan is priced at $299 and is available in two color options: black or white.

Basically, if all this technology works and FDA approval is granted, we could be looking at a set of smart scales that provide everyday tools for "end-to-end" health management, like the Apple Watch 7 or the best fitness trackers. Add to that, and you have a smart set-up that will help you stay healthy this year.
