Apple's rumored iPhone14Max could be my hot phone in 2022

In my humble opinion, one of the biggest problems with the iPhone 13 is the lack of a high refresh rate display: unlike the 120Hz LTPO panel on the iPhone 13 Pro model, the standard model and iPhone 13 mini are only 60Hz The standard model and the iPhone 13 mini are limited to a mere 60Hz. This is frustrating since many of the best Android phones have 90Hz displays.

However, this could change with the rumored iPhone 14 Max, perhaps a larger variant of the standard next-generation iPhone. At least according to The Elec's supply chain sources, this model is not likely to have the camera capabilities of the iPhone 13 Pro model, but it is said to have a 120 Hz display.

LG is expected to be the supplier of this 120Hz LTPO display, but there is no mention of the standard iPhone 14 having such a screen. iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 14 Pro Max are expected to be a pair of Pro devices but this is odd because if one iPhone 14 has a 60Hz display and the other a 120Hz panel, it would create further division in the next-generation iPhone series.

Speaking of the Pro, the current iPhone 13 Pro models are also said to have 120Hz screens, as both have high refresh rate displays. However, the iPhone 14 Pro's display is reportedly made by Samsung, while the iPhone 14 Pro Max could use an LG display.

This all sounds like a supply chain complication, no doubt because Apple is trying to plan ahead for any disruption in component production due to the coronavirus pandemic.

That said, this rumor makes the idea of an iPhone 14 Max more appealing to me.

I currently use an iPhone 13 Pro at work. It's a great phone and one of our picks for "best phone you can buy right now."

It is a bit pricey for a device that still has a notch. And while the camera is great, the addition of the telephoto camera that the Pro phone brings doesn't seem like a compelling reason to get the iPhone 13 Pro instead of the standard iPhone 13.

However, after several years of using Android phones with high refresh rate displays, the iPhone 13's 60Hz display is simply too shocking for me to return.

However, if Apple made a higher-priced iPhone with two great rear-facing cameras and a 120 Hz display, it would be very attractive to me and to others. Combining these two features would make the iPhone 14 Max one of my most anticipated phones in 2022.

One drawback is that current rumors suggest that only the iPhone 14 Pro model will have a notchless display and Apple will use a punch-hole selfie camera. However, the iPhone 14 rumors are still early days, and should be viewed with a certain degree of skepticism.

Overall expectations for the iPhone 14 include a refreshed design (possibly reducing the size of the rear camera module), Touch ID under the display, and an upgraded sensor rather than camera count.

Given that a September reveal is likely on the cards, we have some time to wait before we get a more concrete idea of what upgrades the iPhone 14 will sport. In the meantime, it seems likely that the rumored iPhone SE 3 will appear next year before the iPhone 14.
