How Nespresso Uses Augmented Reality to Fight Climate Change

Nespresso has brought AR to select stores worldwide this holiday season. As part of the coffee maker's "Festive For Good" campaign, the AR experience, called "Gifts of the Forest," allows customers to use their smartphones to scan QR codes scattered across store windows to customers can enjoy a digital rainforest experience.

The brand, which is responsible for some of the best coffee makers on the market, has long celebrated the biodiversity of the rainforest, which contributes significantly to coffee growth. But this latest campaign marks the beginning of a collaboration between Nespresso and Conservation International and a subsequent pledge to protect 10 million trees in the Amazon.

Through augmented reality, the "Gift of the Forest" installation brings the rainforest to life, allowing visitors to look around the Nespresso machines while paper birds fly out of store windows and parrots nest among the trees. Developed with German retail specialist Riga Nova and Colombian fashion designer Johanna Ortiz, the experience also introduces a new series of pod capsules, Gift of the Forest.

The intricate paper-like artwork featured throughout the installation is also reflected in Nespresso's new pod series.

"Colombian coffee has a really special place in my heart. And knowing that Nespresso, as an active supporter of the fight against climate change, has gone beyond its commitment to agroforestry was another big reason why this collaboration made perfect sense."

The Nespresso AR experience will run through the end of January 2022, and the new "Gift of the Forest" pod series is available now. Flavors include Forest Black, Forest Fruit, and Forest Almond.
