Photography on the Samsung Galaxy S22 will be enhanced, not by powerful new hardware, but by the power of software post-processing, a new rumor claims.

Ice Universe is building on previous leaks, reiterating claims that the Galaxy S22 Ultra will feature an "AI Detail Enhancement Mode" on its 108MP main camera when taking full-resolution photos. A screenshot of a current Samsung phone with a 108MP camera (presumably the Galaxy S21 Ultra) explains where the button to enable this feature is located, and IU also tells us that when this feature is enabled, photos will have "more detail, color, and brightness than normal 108MP

The second Ice Universe tweet emphasizes the importance of the S22 Ultra's camera AI in addition to this; IU explains that about 70% of the S22 Ultra's photography improvements are due to these features, with only 30% coming from hardware enhancements.

It is a very safe bet, rather than a leak, that the phone's camera will be improved over the previous generation's camera. However, it would be interesting to hear exactly how they will be improved, and Samsung's new focus on AI-enhanced photography is important considering its competitors.

Samsung's main rivals, Apple and Google, focus more on software processing than camera hardware compared to Samsung. iPhone 13 Pro Max, iPhone 13 Pro, and Google 6 Pro all have the same number of Galaxy S21 Ultra sensors or 108MP main camera resolution, but they all score higher than that in our Best Camera Phones guide. Perhaps a new focus on post-processing will help Samsung secure a lead in image quality.

The Galaxy S22 Ultra is rumored to have a similar camera setup as the Galaxy S21 Ultra, only some sensors will be replaced with new versions of the same general specs. The Galaxy S22 and Galaxy S22 Plus are rumored to have more significant changes and are believed to add a 50MP main camera and a telephoto camera with 3x optical zoom.

Besides the camera, all three models in the Galaxy S22 series are rumored to have major changes to their bodies: the S22 and S22 Plus are said to be smaller than their 2021 counterparts, and the S22 Ultra is believed to be more square and wider with a built-in S Pen stylus. Other rumors mention that the S22 line will use either the Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 or Exynos 2200 chipset, depending on where you buy it; the S22 and S22 Plus will have 8GB of RAM and 256GB of storage, while the S22 Ultra will have 12 GB or 16 GB of RAM and 256 GB or 512 GB of storage.

The latest we've heard on a release date for the S22 series is that it has been pushed back a bit, but not until February 9, 2022. This is also reportedly the date when pre-orders will open, but the full retail launch is leaning toward February 25.
