Recent reports that the upcoming iMac 27-inch will feature a mini LED display may be off the mark.

Speculation that the 27-inch iMac will feature a mini-LED display has been around for quite some time, and Ross Young, co-founder and CEO of Display Supply Chain Consultants, was the most recent industry insider to suggest that the next iMac will feature mini-LED technology. and was the most recent industry insider to suggest that the next iMac will use mini-LED technology.

However, a new DigiTimes report debunks these claims, claiming that Apple has chosen to stick with LCD panels. The California-based tech giant is reportedly likely to upgrade its displays with LED chips that are "30-40% up from previous models," which would significantly increase brightness output.

Adding to the confusion is the fact that Young has not backed down from his original claims. In response to the report, the consultant took to Twitter to assert, "I still believe it's a mini-LED."

We expect some sort of clarification from Apple in the spring, when the 27-inch iMac is rumored to be announced.

DigiTimes sources also claim that the 27-inch iMac will be inspired by its smaller 24-inch iMac 2021 sibling, will have a thinner exterior design, and will be available in a variety of colors. Leaker @dylandkt previously suggested that the 27-inch iMac's color scheme will be darker than the 24-inch's pastel colors, but this remains to be seen.

Under the hood, it is speculated that the 27-inch iMac will feature the newly released M1 Pro and M1 Max chips. The base configuration will also likely include 16GB of RAM and a 512GB SSD. It is difficult to predict a base price, but anything in the $2,000 range seems quite reasonable (or at least reasonable for Apple).

With a spring 2022 release date, it shouldn't be too long before Apple is ready to start talking officially about the 27-inch iMac. At the very least, the confusion between mini-LEDs and LCDs will be definitively resolved then.
