Update - December 23: Since writing this article, Xiaomi has revealed more details and given us more details about the 12 Pro's new display.

The Xiaomi 12 is now only a week away from launch. At least in China.

As announced on Xiaomi's official Weibo page, the Xiaomi 12 series will be unveiled at an event in Beijing on December 28. This means it will be one of the first phones to feature the Snapdragon 8 Gen 1, the latest flagship-class chipset that will be found in more premium Android phones throughout 2022 Xiaomi said at Qualcomm's launch event earlier this month and had already announced plans to use Gen 1 silicon.

The announcements did not end with the date and time of the event; Xiaomi also gave the first official glimpse of the 12 and 12 Pro handsets. The design is similar to the Xiaomi 11T series, featuring a central punch-hole camera and flat display.

In another post by Lu Weibing, president of Xiaomi's China group, it was also revealed that Xiaomi will launch the 12 series with the MIUI 13 operating system based on Android 12. This also positions the 12 series as a kind of early adopter, as most Android smartphone makers have yet to adopt the latest version.

We have seen leaks showing the appearance of the back of the phone and leaks discussing the possibility of 67W charging, which also seem to match those of the Xiaomi 11T. There was also quite a bit of talk about the phone's camera; it is possible that the back of the 12 series model will feature multiple 50MP cameras, and these cameras may have lenses tuned by the camera company Leica.

The first details will be announced next week, but the world will not be able to purchase the Xiaomi 12 for several more months, probably around March. Even then, it is unlikely that the phone will be released in the U.S., as Xiaomi does not currently have a U.S. presence and the current political climate does not appear to be welcoming to Xiaomi.
