HBO Max has just canceled a reboot of this sitcom after a single season

HBO Max is clearly not in the holiday spirit. This classic sitcom refresh was canceled after just one season on the platform.

The 2021 version of "Head of the Class," a reboot of the series of the same name that ran for five seasons between 1986 and 1991, introduced viewers to an entirely new cast and a new high school. Unfortunately, HBO Max subscribers were not that interested in the series, and it was cancelled after only 10 episodes had aired.

The Hollywood Reporter reported that HBO Max has halted plans for more episodes, with HBO stating in a statement: "We will not be moving forward with a second season of 'Head of the Class. We are grateful to have worked with Bill (Lawrence), Amy (Porcher) and Seth (Cohen) to bring back such an iconic series and appreciate the hard work and dedication of them and their amazing cast."

The reboot followed much the same premise as its predecessor. The show centered on the trials and tribulations of a young teacher (Isabel Gomez) taking an honors class at a fictional high school filled with quirky characters. Robin Givens continued her role from the original series, but otherwise the cast was fresh-faced.

Only one other original series has been cancelled by HBO Max since its inception almost a year and a half ago. The teenage drama Generations was canceled after one season consisting of 16 episodes; HBO Max seems to be taking a page from Netflix.

The world's most popular streaming service has developed a reputation for ruthlessly canceling original shows in one sitting if they don't work out. This trend of cancellations was seen last month when Netflix cancelled its live-action adaptation of the anime "Cowboy Bebop" after the first season had begun.

HBO Max and Netflix are not the only ones in a cancellation mood these days. Disney Plus also recently canceled its reboot of the cop-and-canine comedy series Turner & Hooch and cancelled its family-friendly series Future Diary. Overall, 2021 was a pretty brutal year in terms of renewals, with many shows being cancelled across streaming platforms.

While HBO Max will not be moving forward with a second season of "Head of Class," we still rank it among our top choices among the best streaming services. If you're looking for something to watch on HBO Max during the holiday season, try the best Christmas TV episodes and specials.
