GMC Hummer EV2021: Release date, price, interior, Crab Walk, etc.

With the arrival of GMC's Hummer EV Edition 1, one of the most controversial vehicles of the past 25 years is reborn. Opinions were divided about the original gasoline-powered Hummer, with some viewing it as a symbol of largesse and excess and others as an incredible Mad Max-style off-roader.

However, GM killed off the internal combustion engine model in 2010, and this is its new rebirth with electricity. The Hummer EV Edition1 is expected to run off the line by the end of 2021, and will come equipped with all the bells and whistles GMC can think of. This includes fully equipped to handle both on-road and off-road, underbody armor to protect the bottom of the truck, a total of 18 exterior cameras, a huge battery, etc. The GC Hummer EV has it all.

The Hummer EV Edition 1 also features adaptive air suspension, active safety features, and impressive performance. Is all of this worth more than $105,000, and here's everything you need to know about EV's next big thing.

Reservations for the top-of-the-line $105,595 Hummer EV Edition 1 sold out quickly, and so far Hummer has no plans to sell any more. For those lucky (and wealthy) enough to place their orders early, it began rolling off the production line in December 2021.

However, you can still reserve a later model by paying a $100 deposit.

Next up is the EV3X, which costs just under $100,000 and is slated to arrive in the fall of 2022, with a range of 350 miles and about 800 hp. Next will be the EV2X, which will cost just under $90,000, and the EV2, which will cost just under $80,000. Both will be powered by two motors, have an output of 625 hp, and a range of 300 miles.

But you will have to wait patiently: the EV2X will not arrive until 2023, and the EV2 in 2024; the EV3x and EV2X SUV models will not appear until spring 2023, both with a range of 300 miles; the EV2 SUV will appear in spring 2024 with a range of only 250 miles.

The pure electric vehicle pays homage to the original Hummer, albeit with more rounded body molding and LED headlamps; as a four-door pickup, it should seat five adults relatively comfortably.

The black and white interior looks comfortable and has some interesting design touches, such as the driver's seat footrest in the shape of Neil Armstrong's space suit boot. Why. Because the designers apparently thought of the Hummer EV as a moonshot.

Those who need to carry heavy loads should note that the Hummer EV's truck bed is a bit small at about 5 feet long.

The full-length pickup bed is typically about 6.5 feet long, but the EV Edition 1's bed could probably hold two e-bikes.

To that end, the Hummer has a fold-down multi-level tailgate that makes it very easy to get gear in and out of the back.

To help do so, the Hummer has a fold-down multi-stage tailgate that makes it very easy to get the gear in and out of the rear.

All of this fits on standard wagon-wheel-sized 35-inch tires, just in case you want to haul a load across the plains.

And for an open country feel, the roof glass of the Hummer EV can be removed for open air driving and stored in the front trunk or flank. How cool is that?

When driving on the highway, the new Hummer will feature GM's "Super Cruise" hands-off feature, the closest technology to self-driving cars today.

Super Cruise requires the driver to keep his or her eyes on the road, but it is functional on more than 200,000 miles of highways in the U.S. and Canada and can certainly reduce driver fatigue on long trips. (Tesla's Autopilot, in case you were wondering, is only supposed to be used with at least one hand on the wheel.) The same goes for Volvo and BMW designs. )

There is also room for Super Cruise to graduate to a "Level 3" autonomous driving system. This means that drivers will be able to take their attention off the road in some cases, but it is still a long way from being able to move around without driver control. However, there is no timeline yet as to when this will happen.

There is a 13.4-inch center touchscreen and a 12.3-inch instrument cluster.

The large screen will display an almost infinite amount of detailed information about the status of the suspension system, powertrain, and other parts of the pickup. In addition, the system is compatible with Android Auto and Apple Carplay.

The first version, the EV Edition 1, uses three electric motors (one in the front and two in the rear) and produces 1,000 hp. Initial torque rating is 11,500 lb-ft, but no word on towing capacity; GMC will equip this truck with a sports car-like launch control mode that will accelerate this beast from 0 to 60 mph in 3.0 seconds. Compare that to the popular internal combustion-engine-powered Ford F150, which takes 6.2 seconds.

The automaker also promises that the giant Hummer will have a range of up to 350 miles on a single charge. Considering the size of the car, this is a remarkable figure. Even more impressive is the claim that the car can be charged to a range of 100 miles in 10 minutes. However, this assumes the use of ultra-fast 800-volt charging stations. It should be noted, however, that as of this writing, 350 kW charging stations are not available for home use and are very rare on the road. (See TK and TK for more on charging.)

One of the features of this Hummer is its off-road capability. To this end, it has a terrain driving mode that raises the vehicle's height by an additional 2 inches in addition to the standard 10 inches of clearance. Also, when the vehicle is in Extract (get me out of here) mode, the body height is raised by 6 inches. How much higher is ...... According to GMC, the vehicle can be driven in two feet of water without a problem.

In addition to the myriad of driving features, the Hummer EV Edition 1 will also feature a "crab-walking" driving mode that we can't wait to try. This will allow the Hummer to drive at an angle, thanks to torque vectoring and rear-wheel steering. This is for getting out of (or into) tight spots. This feature would be useful when trying to push this huge car into a small parking space.

There is also a launch mode called "WTF mode," which shifts the brunt of the truck's 1,000 horsepower to the wheels; WTF stands for "Watts to Freedom," which is essentially Hummer's take on Tesla's "Ludicrous" mode.

To maximize the adventure, the Hummer EV will also feature a transparent "sky panel" that forms what Hummer calls the Infinity Roof. This panel can also be removed, allowing for an unobstructed experience of the surroundings.

While many other EV pickup trucks appear to be in the prototype stage and not ready for production, GMC's Hummer looks like the real deal. And this automaker is no startup. From Cadillac's Super Cruze to the Sierra heavy-duty pickup truck, the company has proven technology. It even has experience in the EV field with the Chevrolet Volt, recent battery issues aside.

While other companies promise cheaper electric pickups, both Tesla and Rivian models will cost $30,000 less.
