Disney Plus just beats Netflix to Apple SharePlay — How to Try It Now

Disney Plus has added a feature that Hawkeye himself can use. Because what if, like Clint Barton himself, you get home late for the holidays and can't watch a show or movie with your family?

An update to the Disney Plus app for each of Apple's platforms, released today (December 15), makes the app one of the largest streaming services to support Apple's new technology for synchronized streaming. SharePlay is the first app to support Apple's 2021 update (added in iOS 15.1, iPadOS 15.1, tvOS 15.1, and macOS 12.1) late in the year, combining FaceTime calling with the watch party-like features that Disney Plus has long offered.

For example, SharePlay allows you and your fellow Apple device owners to simultaneously watch an episode of the upcoming "Boba Fett book" remotely, watching and talking to each other the entire time. As people talk, the volume is turned down and Spatial Audio is supported, making it feel like you are in the room together. This kind of feature support helps Disney Plus continue to rank on our Best Streaming Services list.

We knew this support was coming because Apple listed Disney Plus as one of the SharePlay apps when iOS 15 features like SharePlay were first previewed at WWDC in June. Supported apps include Apple's TV app, Mubi, Paramount Plus, and Showtime. And with Paramount Plus support, you can watch South Park remotely: if you support Paramount Plus, you can also remotely watch "South Park: Post-Cobit 2," one of the biggest new shows to watch this weekend.

Want to give it a try? First, make sure your Apple device is up-to-date (at least iOS 15.1, iPadOS 15.1, tvOS 15.1, macOS 12.1). on your iPhone, iPad, or Apple TV, open "Settings" and tap "Software Update" . Install any available updates. Next, open the App Store, tap your profile icon, and scroll down to find any available Disney Plus updates. Make sure all the people you are SharePlay calling are also updated.

Next, start a FaceTime call on your device with everyone you want to see together. Then open Disney Plus and you should see the SharePlay popover window with the option to share; click SharePlay! Everyone on the call will be able to pause or control the playback of movies, shows, and songs.

To exit SharePlay, tap the X in the upper corner. Tap "End for Everyone" to shut down the call, or "End Only for Me" to let everyone else continue watching.

Netflix was noted for not being present in the listed partners, and we waited in hopes that this would be fixed. No such support has arrived, and Netflix has not deployed a similar feature; since Netflix has its own mobile apps on Android and iOS, we wonder if this big red streaming machine could incorporate such a feature in its app, And we privately wondered if it would be tied to the streaming device's user account.

And now that Disney Plus supports SharePlay, we are wondering when the other already announced big SharePlay apps - HBO Max, ESPN, and Hulu - will get the feature. Maybe they are saving that update as something to unwrap closer to the end of the year.

What could be better with SharePlay is the experience on Apple TV: in order for your friends on a SharePlay call to see you, they have to use a secondary device like an iPhone or iPad. Who would want to have to hold their phone up at eye level while streaming something on their TV?

This is why I hope Apple releases a webcam, or webcam support, for Apple TV. The USB-C port on the set-top box is not used by the average user (it is mostly for developers now), and a camera could be attached to it, and that camera could use Center Stage to zoom in on you from a distance.
