Update: According to recent reports, the iMac 27-inch will not actually have a mini LED display. The next all-in-one Apple desktop will stick with LCD panels instead.

Ever since the release of the colorful and excellent Apple iMac 2021, hardcore fans and creators have wondered when Apple would release the more powerful iMac Pro. It appears that 2022 will be the year.

According to Display Supply Chain Consultants (DSCC) via 9to5Mac, Apple will release a 27-inch iMac Pro with a mini LED display and ProMotion technology in the spring of 2022.DSCC co-founder and CEO Ross Young claims that the mini-LED panel will feature an oxide backplane and a variable refresh rate of 120Hz. Without getting into the nitty-gritty, oxide backplanes allow for more efficient power consumption, better image uniformity, and longer lifetime.

In a DSCC blog post, the supply chain analysis firm predicts that mini LED panels with oxide backplanes will be available in 2022. In an email to Tom's Guide, Young revealed that he came to this conclusion after discussions with members of the display supply chain, including panel suppliers, backlight manufacturers, and LED manufacturers.

DSCC is highly respected in the display supply chain world and this claim deserves consideration. The company has already employed the Full Array Local Dimming (FALD) solution on its current 2021 iPad Pro with M1 and on its 2021 MacBook Pro with M1 Pro (or M1 Max). In both reviews, we were impressed by the high contrast of each display.

Note that Young made a similar prediction on Twitter earlier this year. Now, however, he seems to be doubling down on a spring 2022 launch.

In any case, given the power of the M1 Pro and M1 Max chips, we look forward to seeing what both chips can do in an all-in-one desktop. There are also rumors of at least three new external displays currently in development, one of which is a 32-inch Pro XDR variant with Apple's custom silicon.
