Update: Samsung's Galaxy S22 Ultra could challenge the iPhone 13 Pro with a reported 1TB of onboard storage.

As we look ahead to 2022, our attention is shifting to Samsung and the Galaxy S22. Rumor has it that Samsung's latest flagship will launch in early February and bring the new Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 chip to a large portion of the US market.

However, according to a new report from SamMobile, Samsung is aiming to keep the Galaxy S22's launch price at $799, the same as the Galaxy S21 that debuted earlier this spring. $799 would make the Galaxy S21 a great device Because while the OnePlus 9 and Pixel 6 are priced lower than that, the S21 is still a bargain even before carriers and trade-ins are taken into account.

Sam Mobile has not said whether the Galaxy S22 Plus (or Pro) or S22 Ultra will also keep the same price as the S21 ($999 and $1199 respectively). It is unlikely that Samsung will raise the price of the middle child, but with all the features rumored to be included in the Galaxy S22 Ultra, the top-of-the-line model may cost a bit more than this year.

Of course, if the Galaxy S22 sticks to the $799 price point this report claims, that puts the Galaxy S21 FE in an odd spot. Rumor has it that this budget flagship will be $699, only $100 cheaper than the newer (and arguably better) Galaxy S22.

We've talked at length about how Samsung should have dropped the Galaxy S21 FE from its plans months ago. But let's not forget that the S20 FE was launched in 2020 at a price several hundred dollars cheaper than the base model Galaxy S20. A price of $599 for the S21 FE would make more sense.

The aggressive price reduction of the Galaxy S21 series (recall that the Galaxy S20 debuted at $200 less than its original price) could make the Galaxy S21 FE a tough sell. Since the Galaxy S21 already has a plastic body to cut costs, the question remains what else Samsung will cut for the FE version. We imagine that total RAM might be knocked down to 6GB, but that leaves little else that would not compromise the overall quality of the phone.

For now, we believe Samsung will unveil the Galaxy S21 FE at CES 2022 in January and the Galaxy S22 in early February. The centerpiece of the latter, of course, is the new Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 we have yet to get our hands on. Not to mention the rumored Galaxy Note-ized Galaxy S22 Ultra, which may have a built-in S Pen like the retired Galaxy Note series.
