iPhone14Pro could be the first iPhone without a notch in 5 years

Update: The iPhone 14 Pro and Pro Max may have a 48MP main camera lens and 8GB of RAM. If that happens, it could be a real Apple powerhouse.

The iPhone 14 is still a long way off, but rumors about it have already begun to fly. In this case, we may learn a bit more about Apple's future display plans, especially the iPhone 14 Pro model. This could spell the end of the dreaded notch we have had since the iPhone X in 2017.

Korean publication The Elec reported that Apple will use a hole-punched notch in the iPhone 14 Pro's front camera, similar to those found on the best Android phones. This simply means that the display will take up the entire front of the phone, except for a small hole for the camera lens.

Some say that this all-screen experience makes many top-tier Android phones look better than the latest iPhone 13. We reserve our own judgment, but you can judge for yourself. That said, this report lends credence to some of the iPhone 14 renderings we have seen recently.

According to The Elec, Samsung has ordered the technology needed to produce the OLED display from Philoptics and Wonik IPS. The technology will enable more precise laser drilling. Apple seems keen to leverage Samsung's display capabilities for the iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 14 Pro Max using the Korean company's HIAA (Hole-in-Active-Area) process.

HIAA is currently the most advanced hole-in-area drilling method, using a laser to drill a hole between two OLED manufacturing processes. While this seems difficult to pull off successfully, Apple has historically wanted the best for their phones, which is what consumers will ultimately pay for.

The Elec noted that the base iPhone 14 and iPhone 14 Max will continue to feature a notch for Face ID. However, The Elec also noted that the Pro model will continue to feature variable refresh rate LTPO technology combined with an OLED panel.

Samsung is not the only company that The Elec has mentioned as a possible manufacturer of the iPhone 14 display; LG seems particularly eager to get in on the Under Display Camera (UDC) technology UDC could be the key to getting Face ID under the display and eliminating the need for a notch. LG also wants to increase Samsung's display supply for the next iPhone, which the company is said to be still in the testing and development phase.
