Tesla Model 3 and Model Y get upgraded next year — we know so far

Tesla is not an automaker that specifically designates cars by year of release. The official stance is that features will be rolled out as soon as they are ready. It is mere coincidence that many of these features tend to appear when we change our calendars.

Now that 2021 is coming to a close, it is time to see what Tesla has in store for us next year. Thankfully, leaks from the European testing program may have revealed what features will be included in the Tesla Model 3 and Model Y

. Naturally, a portion of the accompanying document was posted online (via Elektrek), revealing all the changes planned for the future.

That list includes many new ones, but many of the changes are relatively minor. After all, not many people care if the washer fluid pump has been updated.

However, a few changes are worth noting, including a new low-voltage (15.5V) lithium-ion battery. This will likely replace the standard 12V car battery that powers all low-power functions such as door locks, alarms, and the on-board computer. Tesla has already done this with the Model S and Model Y, so this change was inevitable.

The Model 3 performance variant will also feature a new high-performance motor and an all-new infotainment computer. There is also a "superhero" that integrates a horn, alarm, and external speakers into one device.

Tesla may be the type of automaker that prefers to offer aftermarket features through software updates, but that is not always possible. These updates rely on existing hardware that the automaker has had the foresight to install.

We do not know what benefits these features, especially the new infotainment computer, will bring. However, given that Tesla has already begun installing the new AMD Ryzen chips in its Model Y in China, resulting in improved infotainment performance and load times, we can expect the same to happen here.

Sadly, AMD-powered gaming rigs with 10 teraflops of power will never be installed in inexpensive Tesla cars. Not yet, anyway.

There is still no official announcement from Tesla regarding these updates, but no doubt we will hear more in the coming weeks. We will bring you updates from Tesla as soon as they become available.
