iOS 15.2 New features will help you not get screwed into iPhone repair

Apple's iOS 15.2 software update will bring a new iPhone feature that allows users to check if they are using the correct parts after a repair.

iOS 15.2 adds a "Parts and Service" section to the "About" screen in the Settings app. Just below the general information about your phone, "Parts and Service" will list your phone's repair history and any parts that have been replaced. You can find this section by going to Settings, tapping General, and selecting About.

I am running the latest iOS 15.2 public beta on my iPhone 11 Pro Max - a device that has never needed repair, which may explain why the Parts and Service section does not appear in my version of the software. Instead, there is a menu item that informs me of my AppleCare coverage status.

If the Parts and Service section does appear on the About page, what you see depends on the model of phone you are running, according to support documentation posted by Apple. On the iPhone XR and later (including the 2020 iPhone SE), it will show if the battery has been replaced. Owners of the iPhone 11, iPhone 12, and iPhone 13 will also see if the display has been replaced, and the iPhone 12 and iPhone 13 will also show the camera replacement status.

In addition to the repair status, the menu will also indicate if the repair includes what are called "Apple Genuine Parts." Tapping on that information will bring up more data, including the date of the repair.

If the repair is incomplete or not functioning properly, an "Unknown Parts" message will appear next to the camera, battery, and display listings. It may also appear if the replacement part has already been used on another iPhone or is not certified by Apple.

The addition of parts and service information to iOS 15.2 comes as Apple seeks to be more transparent about repair work done on its phones. Last month, Apple announced a self-service repair program that allows iPhone 12 and iPhone 13 users to order parts from Apple and repair them themselves. That same month, Apple also announced a software fix that prevents Face ID from being disabled on phones that have had their screens repaired outside of Apple's authorized repair stores.

iOS 15.2 remains in beta, but a software release candidate was issued to developers earlier this week. This is usually a sign that a software update will be released to the public very soon.

In addition to adding parts and services, iOS 15.2 launches several features that were promised when iOS 15 was first previewed this summer. These include a new "App Privacy Report" feature that lets you know which apps have accessed your camera, location, and contacts, and a legacy contacts feature where your iCloud data will be passed on to a selected person after you die. announced in October. Apple Music voice plans are also expected to launch in iOS 15.2. In addition, iPhones and iPads can now be reset from the lock screen after repeated failed login attempts. In addition, this iOS 16 fan render video presents some unique features that Apple may implement in the next version of the OS.
