Razer's new iPhone13MagSafe cooler is impressively ridiculous

Have you ever been immersed in a long mobile gaming session and your iPhone 13 gets so hot that you wish you could literally attach a fan to the back to prevent overheating? Well, your (very special) prayers have been answered in the form of the Razer Cooler Chroma.

This mobile accessory attaches a 7-bladed fan to the back of the iPhone via MagSafe to prevent the iPhone from getting too hot and causing performance issues due to overheating. We can confirm that this is not an unseasonal April Fool's joke.

It is an odd accessory given that we have not encountered any significant temperature spikes in our iPhone 13 gaming experience, likely due to the power and efficiency of the A15 Bionic chip.

Furthermore, while MagSafe magnets are used to secure the fan to compatible iPhones, the Razer Cooler Chroma requires a USB-C cable to connect to a power outlet for constant power, so the mobile nature of mobile gaming's aspect of mobile gaming is diminished.

Owners of older model iPhones and Android devices are not left out in the cold either, as Razer offers an even flashier model that attaches via two plastic clamps that look rather obtrusive. Whichever version you choose, the Razer Cooler Chroma costs $60, and, not surprisingly, both feature controllable RGB lighting.

While there is a certain novelty to this mobile accessory, we are less convinced of its necessity. Performance degradation due to overheating can be a problem during mobile gaming, especially on lower-performance devices, but it is unclear how much fixing a fan on the outside of the phone would improve the situation.

The need for permanent tethering also significantly reduces the usefulness of the Razer Cooler Chroma. Not to mention the inconvenience of fixing a relatively large fan to the back of a mobile device, which is likely to lead to a rather unpleasant gaming experience overall.

In the words of Dr. Ian Malcolm of Jurassic Park fame, "Razer was so preoccupied with whether they could, they never stopped to consider whether they should."
