Each year, Strava, the world's largest sports community, releases its annual "Year in Sport" report, revealing activity trends among its community of 95 million athletes (users) worldwide.

Following the trend in 2020, when activity surged during the coronavirus containment period, global activity rates continued to rise in 2021, with runners, riders, and hikers logging indoor and outdoor mileage and uploads to the platform exceeding 37 million per week. The number of runs uploaded to Strava in 2021 was 1.3 times the number in 2020. The same was true for cyclists, with 1.2 times as many rides uploaded.

The biggest increases in activity were in walking and yoga. In the U.S., only 5% of all uploaded activities were walking in 2019; by 2021, 12% of all uploaded activities will be outside walking, with athletes averaging 2.5 hours of walking per week, Strava, also sees walking becoming popular among all age groups.

U.S. runners ran a total of 425.1 million miles in 2021, with a total elevation of 18.8 billion feet. In the U.S., the average runner runs 3.7 miles in 35 minutes and 29 seconds. Men average slightly farther, running 4 miles for every upload to Strava. The average for women is a little less, at 3.4 miles.

Runners in the U.S. seem to go out for longer runs on average than runners in the UK. In the UK, the average runner travels 3.4 miles per run and runs for 34 minutes and 17 seconds.

American cyclists have traveled a total of 1.3 billion miles and climbed 57.7 billion feet. On average, cyclists ride 13.8 miles each time and run for 1 hour and 7 minutes. Men averaged 14.4 miles and women averaged 11.8 miles.

Again, U.S. athletes traveled longer than British cyclists, uploading an average of 12.9 miles of cycling and riding an average of 1 hour.
