For years we have been waiting for Google to release a smartwatch that could compete with the Apple Watch for the title of best smartwatch. A new report suggests that that showdown may finally happen in 2022.

According to the Insider report, Google's Pixel hardware group is hard at work developing its own smartwatch that will supposedly pair with the upcoming Pixel phone just as the Apple Watch pairs with the iPhone. As a matter of fact, the new watch is Google's attempt to compete directly with Apple in the wearables arena and is expected to debut in 2022.

According to unnamed sources by Insider, the watch has yet to be officially announced or named, but analysts are informally calling the device the Google Pixel Watch. Unfortunately, Google seems to be keeping things quiet for now, as the company has previously denied rumors about the watch. The company acquired Fitbit earlier this year for $2.1 billion, but Insider reports that the Fitbit team is not working on the Google Pixel Watch at all.

As for what to expect from the watch, that remains to be seen. Rumors suggest that it will have basic features like step counting and heart rate monitoring, and with Google's acquisition of Fitbit, Wear OS and Fitbit may be integrated in some way (codenamed "Nightlight").

Now that Google has not entered the market, Samsung is producing its best smartwatch for Android in the form of the Galaxy Watch 4. At this time, there are few other smartwatches that can compare on Google's platform, but that scenario could change if Google launches its own competing product.

No one really knows how much the Google Pixel Watch will cost; sources close to The Verge say that Google may price it higher than Fitbit.
