Top Android Chipsets Are Getting a New Name

The Samsung Galaxy S22, which will debut next year, will likely feature Qualcomm's Snapdragon system-on-chip. However, the chipset, which should also be found in many of the best Android phones slated for release in 2022, will adopt a new name.

Qualcomm announced today (November 22) that it will simplify the names of its mobile chipsets. For example, Snapdragon 888 is Qualcomm's current top-of-the-line silicon. For example, Snapdragon 888 is Qualcomm's current top-tier silicon. Instead, future Snapdragon silicon will feature a single-digit series and generation number.

The name change will likely begin with the Snapdragon 8 series chips, whose next chipset will be announced at Qualcomm's annual Snapdragon Summit later this month.

Qualcomm's announcement confirms rumors suggesting that a new naming convention is being prepared for its chipsets. Earlier this month, leaker Ice Universe tweeted that the chipmaker's next frontline silicon would be called Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 and not Snapdragon 898 as was widely assumed.

Whatever name Qualcomm ultimately uses, the new chipset is expected to appear in Samsung's next flagship phone, as Qualcomm's new chips usually debut in any Galaxy S model that Samsung announces. However, other rumors suggest that Motorola and Xiaomi may release phones with the new silicon this year.

Leaked benchmarks of Samsung's upcoming chip do not point to any significant performance gains. First, the Geekbench test results are only one measure of speed and not necessarily the last information about performance. Another is that the devices from which the results were leaked may not be fully optimized for performance.

Qualcomm announced a new naming plan and stated that it will brand Snapdragon as its own brand. Additionally, since 5G is ubiquitous on the Snapdragon chip, Qualcomm will no longer call it. The company said in a statement, "Going forward, 5G will be the norm on Snapdragon's connected platform."
