X-Men'97 Comes to Disney Plus — Everything You Know So Far

"X-Men '97" shows that Disney is not afraid to use nostalgia as a marketing tool. Announced on Disney Plus Day, "X-Men '97" is an animated show that picks up where "X-Men: The Animated Series" left off more than 20 years ago. It is an animated show that begins where "X-Men: The Animated Series" ended more than 20 years ago.

This information comes directly from Marvel, which has posted additional information about X-MEN '97 on its website:

"The animated series that made the X-Men a household name will continue as Marvel Studios' X-MEN '97 and will be released in 2023 as It will be distributed exclusively on Disney+!" writes Robin Belt, Editorial Content Manager for Marvel Unlimited, "Bringing back the iconic era and cast of characters from 1992's X-MEN: The Animated Series, this all-new animated series will define a new generation and a decade of fans of the original animated series will enjoy.

"X-MEN '97" features many of the voice actors from the original series, including Cal Dodd (Wolverine), Lenore Zann (Rogue), George Buza (Beast), and Allison Seeley Smith (Storm). New voice talent includes fan favorites such as Jennifer Hale (Mass Effect), Ray Chase (Final Fantasy XV), and Jeff Bennett (Batman: The Brave and the Bold).

Norm Spencer, who played Cyclops, sadly passed away last year, but X-Men '97 seems like a good place to remember his contributions to the franchise.

Behind the scenes, Eric and Julia Lewald, showrunners of the original series, will serve as consultants, as will veteran X-Men director Larry Houston.

For those who weren't around in the early to mid-90s (or who are too old to watch Saturday morning cartoons), Berto cannot overstate the popularity of the X-Men. Marvel's ambitious animated series took the world of children's pop culture by storm, spawning everything from a huge toy line to its own brand of fruit snacks. The show ran for five years and, like the comic that inspired it, maintained a consistent unfolding storyline from beginning to end.

There are not many details to share about "X-Men '97," but we will almost certainly hear more about the project over the next 2023. Since Disney's acquisition of 20th Century Fox, the X-Men films have been in limbo. This means that outside of the ongoing comic books, fans haven't had much of a chance to see their beloved mutant team, and a new X-Men series seems like a sign that Marvel is ready to reintegrate the X-Men team back into the TV and film continuity.
