We've heard a lot about the Samsung Galaxy S22 series rear camera, but very little about the front camera. Until then.
According to sources speaking to GalaxyClub, the Galaxy S22 and Galaxy S22 Plus (which may also be called the S22 Pro) will have a 10MP selfie camera, while the Galaxy S22 Ultra will use a 40MP sensor. These megapixel counts are the same as the Galaxy S21 and Galaxy S20 series. If you are disappointed by these specs, don't worry, because there is more to this story than just the number of megapixels in the sensor.
These rumored resolutions give the impression that Samsung is not changing anything, but that may not be the case. They could improve or change the camera in many ways, not just the megapixel count.
One option would be to increase the sensor size. Another would be to change the aperture size, as Samsung did when moving from the Galaxy S10 to the Galaxy S20. This is not to mention the possibility of software upgrades, which Samsung has certainly introduced with new handsets and subsequent OS updates, which could also affect camera performance or add new features.
Thus, the Galaxy S22 series' selfie camera may not have an increase in megapixels, but there may be some changes in field of view or aperture. It is also likely that Samsung will work on improving image processing and photography software to improve selfie snapping and video.
Speaking of cameras, the rear snapper of the Galaxy S22 Ultra is also the subject of rumors of zero or limited changes from last year's model; like the Galaxy S21 Ultra, it has a 108MP main camera, a 12MP ultrawide camera, and two 10 MP telephoto cameras are said to be included. However, the sensor is said to be upgraded, plus Samsung is said to be reworking the 108MP high-resolution camera mode to provide better ultra-detailed shots.
The cameras rumored for the Galaxy S22 and Galaxy S22 Plus are slightly different from their Galaxy S21 counterparts. They are said to feature a 50MP main camera (presumably the same one found on the Google Pixel 6), a 12MP ultra-wide-angle camera, and a 10MP telephoto camera with 3x optical zoom.
Although the resolution of the main and telephoto cameras is reduced (from 64MP and 48MP, respectively), these new sensors are likely to be larger and more sensitive than previous versions, and will provide better images overall. Additionally, the 3x optical zoom on the telephoto sensor would be a significant improvement over the 3x hybrid zoom on the S21 and S21 Plus.
One could argue that Samsung has been stagnant or lazy by not upgrading the resolution of its selfie camera since the Galaxy S10 (except with the introduction of the Ultra model). However, given that the Galaxy S phone still ranks high in our Best Camera Phones guide, clearly photo quality is not an issue. The same can be said for Apple's iPhones: the iPhone 13 and iPhone 13 Pro remain among the best in cell phone photography, while using the same 12MP resolution for all rear cameras that iPhones have had for years.
The Galaxy S22 series, which is expected to arrive next February, has more to offer than just cameras. All models are said to feature a new chipset, either the Snapdragon 898 or Exynos 2200 (rumored to have an AMD GPU), and are said to be resized, with the S22 and S22 Plus shrinking overall and the S22 Ultra increasing in width.
Part of the S22 Ultra's increased width may be due to another rumor, the built-in S Pen stylus. The Galaxy S21 Ultra was available with an optional S Pen, which was sold separately, but the rumored standard S Pen that can be stored in the phone itself is particularly exciting because it would effectively position the S22 Ultra as the next Galaxy Note.
